constant leverage of his network, current social status and influence for self promotion.

He made himself a brand that was/is constantly in the public eye, even if it only meant "hopping on trends" or "hanging out with rich CACs who ain't got shyt to do with rap".

While other rappers or whatever constantly keep to their own social circles, Hov has constantly branched out and made himself a popular brand by generating the illusion that he's a popular brand.

and it works.

Who was that model that pushed herself into the public eye simply by buying billboards and putting her picture and name on them? was it Anna Nicole?

Well, Hov has constantly one the same thing.... only on a much larger scale.

Simple, business deals, and the power machine behind him. Take that away and just discuss him as a rapper/artist is different story.

That's the thing tho. Not every rapper wants the Jay Z type of success. Some of them are happy with what they do have and the life and things they were able to accomplish. Some rappers are happy with having some sort of normalcy and a bit of privacy in their lives. Not all of them are hungry for that type of spotlight. Contrary to popular belief.

This dude seems like he will never fall off. I mean when you compare him to the all time greats like Rakim, KRS ONE, Nas, Biggie, Pac, Big Daddy Kane, Common, Slick Rick and the rest of the greats, Jay Z seems to be able to stay in the media and be relevant for oh so long.

But why is Jay so popular, successful and relevant. More so than the above mentioned rappers?

Without the success and relevance, would Jay still be considered one of the best?

What is his secret?

SERIOUS DISCUSSION --- LET'S GO!!!!
Without being disrespectful; he's alive > Biggie, Pac,

Stayed our of jail > Slick Rick

Actually came up in a better media era for Rap music > Rakim, KRS ONE, Big Daddy Kane

Put himself around great business minds & learned from their mistakes > Nas

Makes more mainstream music > Common

It's that simple, yet complex

Duke is definitely one of the GOAT busineessmen, but, his catalogue doesn't hold up, artistically.

I'm not saying they all do. I was using what they don't do as a contrast to what Hov does.

Giving a negative example after a positive one is always a good way to accentuate a point one is trying to make.

every step of the way he made the right move, even when he lost to Nas it somehow enhanced his image :wow:
This...he has superior handlers....as for skill level he was able to wave ride and be consistent...

will you take a batting average of .350 for 10 seasons or .400 for 1? thats how i assess his career

Jay Z is popular cause he's a great rapper and amazing artist. Has made Classic songs and albums for damn near 20 years in the game. He's been relevant across a few eras now. Jay Z is successful cause he's smart and a student of the game. But the core of the issue is yes he did marry Beyonce and had a kid with her, that is going to being some extra celebrity to his life. Sure he could of married someone unknown but Jay wanted someone that was his status also.

Jay said he wasn't going to take it to the Rolling Stone level and be rapping when he's old so I'm sure he will stop in his 50's. I think people are surprised at how popular "Magna Carta Holy Grail" is for Jay at this point in his career. How he's still generating this much interest. Jay comes from the Classic Era. His debut came out in the heat of the Biggie and Pac drama and Big passed the torch to Jay clearly.

Jay Z isn't perfect and there are things you can criticize him about. What you can't is his artistry as he has clearly been a historic force in Hip Hop History. He's the most consistent seller of all time when you look his album averages and the amount of albums he has released. At the end of the day he's popular and successful cause he's a Legend. He's literally going to end his career on Top like Jordan in 98.

His network defined his net worth.

Having a sharp business mindful is very helpful. Establishing key relationships, partnerships, etc. That's any great business man & a leader.

Your average rapper is too close minded, too ignorant or simply do not have the same business sense as Jay.

The only talented album he made was reasonable doubt.

After that it was less talent and more music business moves.

So Blueprint, AG,and The Black Album were trash and business inspired?

I mean if you really think that these are trash then that's cool. I just want to make sure that is what you're saying.

Hmmm.... interesting comment and insight.

So it seems clear that a serious rapper who wants to remain relevant and success in this rap game should clearly go to business school, network, network and ofcourse sharpen your lyrical skills and stay up to date with the current hip hop artists.

Do yall think if Jay had not married Beyoncé, he would have been as poplar and successful?

What would have happened if Nas' career if Nas had married Beyoncé instad of Kelis? :krs:
