A south Florida family continues to grieve the devastating loss of a 26-year-old mother who died after undergoing plastic surgery. Jaynisha “Jayla” Williams traveled from her home in Hillsborough County to the Best U Now cosmetic surgery center in Plantation, Florida, for a breast augmentation and a Brazilian butt lift last year and never made it back home.
“She was very caring and always knew what to say, a cheerful personality and all-around beautiful soul,” her sister, Kimia Spikes, told NBC 6.
Williams' mother traveled from California to be with her daughter for the procedure.
Latoshia Leggett sat in the waiting room October 21, 2021, as her daughter underwent the operation. She said she asked staff members multiple times how her girl was doing, and they assured her everything was fine.
“I was asking every hour, ‘How’s my daughter doing? How are things going?’ and they kept telling me, ‘she’s OK, everything is fine,’” she said, NBC 6 reported.
As time passed, she grew concerned about her daughter, especially after it seemed all the other patients had been discharged.
Leggett started wondering why her daughter wasn't among the other patients who were leaving.
“The ambulance pulled up. That’s when I said, ‘Excuse me, can somebody tell me what’s going on?’” she said.
Leggett said the doctor and nurses approached her as Williams was being taken to Plantation General Hospital. “They politely grabbed me and said, 'Your daughter is dead,”' she said.
The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office stated “the procedure was completed but she [Williams] never awoke from the anesthesia," NBC 6 reported.
The medical examiner's report also listed the cause of death as 'undetermined.'
After investigating the incident, it was determined the designated physician for the surgery center seemingly allowed a doctor who was not a qualified anesthesia provider to sedate Williams.
The Florida Health Department filed administrative complaints against the surgery center licensed as Serenity Capital Investments LLC, the Best U Now and Dr. John Edward Nees.
At the time, Dr. Millicent Muir, an OB-GYN, was the physician who administered the anesthesia to Williams. She was barred from practicing that speciality due to an unrelated complaint, per NBC 6.
The medical center reportedly had several anesthesia providers, and Muir wasn't listed as one of them.
Instead, Muir was registered as "recovery" personnel on state records, NBC 6 reported. According to a state complaint, the center employed her to provide anesthesia to patients.
Florida law requires surgeons to use qualified anesthesia providers, such as an anesthesiologist or a certified registered nurse who is licensed to administer anesthesia.
Williams' family said no one from the center has reached out to them in the past year as they've continue to try to heal and to console her now 5- and 2-year-old children.
“It’s hard, ma’am, it’s hard,” Leggett told NBC 6. “They ask if they can go to heaven to see their mom. They don’t understand.”
In addition to being a mother, Williams was also a wife and a photographer.
