Iran is a Shia nation. Iraq is majority Shia, but was run by a Sunni minority under Saddam Hussein. Isis isn't really a religious organization; it's formed from the disenfranchised members of Saddam's power base. The US didn't arm the Sunnis. Now, the Iraqi army that was duped into surrendering to Isis and creating this mess did a great job of giving away a lot of our weapons and vehicles to Isis...
