I used to think the problem with r and b was the artists. But i think it's the production. we need real r and b producers back. The days of jam/lewis, la/babyface, teddy riley, b michael cox, rodney jerkins. How did r and b producers get phased out? and are there any that im sleeping on right now.

That's my main gripe with those examples is that those R&B beats sound too close to HipHop beats. Before, even when the R&b was influenced by HipHop, it was still easy to tell the difference between the two.

I feel you but if you listen to all of them at least a third of them sound like straight up classic R&B.

alot of people hated this type stuff. its like the equivalent of the way alot of us cant stand crunk & b, trap r&b, etc.

for example my dad was like kool & the gang's biggest fan up until they started doing chit like this.

then he disowned them, along with a bunch of other acts.

theres very few people in mainstream r&b that can actually sing nowadays.

thats the worse thing going on.

No, especially early 80's R&B was def still more close to the 70's cause it still had real instrument players in it.
The 90's R&B like New Jack Swing was more influenced by Hip-Hop.
I like the pure R&B better.

early '80s r&b caught the same heat that the mainstream r&b of today catches.

alot of oldheads tuned out in the early '80s because of the disco sound as well as all the commercial pop crossover stuff that was droppin.
just like with now, where mainstream r&b mainly consists of wannabe rap-singers and sellout pop tunes.
all the way down to the longtime r&b favorites, that started making disco or pop records that were perceived as corny. just like now, how it hurts some of our heart where we see singers we liked, who are now snappin, trappin or going pop.

and nobody is exempt. this includes michael jackson. alot of the 50 & up crowd that grew up on the jacksons, werent rockin with thriller, nor anything he did afterwards. i know that one is gonna hurt alot of hearts on here.

but yea, its like de ja vu. hopefully this means that we're in like for a renaissance soon. but i doubt it, seeing that the industry is a dictatorship now and theres far less true talents.

60's to early mid 70's r&b music was organic and had a purpose. Late 70's early 80's was full of that cocained out spacey synthesizer stuff. Mid 80's early 90's was more ballad based with experimental hip hop house blends. Mid 90's early 00's brought it back to the essence with a futuristic neo soul touch. Mid 00's and on cacs and lames invaded the turf

If I had to put my era of choice in order it would be

1. 80's
2. 90's
3. 60's
4. 70's
5. 00's
