I feel like today's artists depends too much on the production. It's not enough vocal ability being shown and more times than not their just riding the beat (ex: bryson tiller).

Truth be told I'm not sure how talented a lot of these mainstream r&b artists are nowadays because they never display much vocal ability.

Singing in this era isn't even important which is one of the biggest problems that r&b has.

80's had shyt like mary jane girls and that nasty, gritty sounds like the vanity 6. 90's was only good until 1996

Ginuwine, usher, aaliyah, Monica, brandy, kelis, etc was dropping heat.

That whole decade was legendary from the new jack swing to the timbaland stuff to seeing Jermaine Dupree and the Neptune's beginning involvement in r&b.

I think the 90s was as good as the 80s.
