I'm a guitarist and Anderson .Paak makes me wish I would've picked up the drums. :pachaha:

:mjpls: I'm buying myself a set for christmas tho. :mjpls:

100% cosign

Paak is a monster on the drumkit (better than Questlove). Paak would make a great urban black gospel drummer and you can tell he studied/grew up playing that style, which is evident in his fills and funky groove

also some jazz-fusion type stuff

most people don't realize how hard it is to drum like this while also singing

.Paak's understanding of time and groove is fukking astounding.
Dude is like a human metronome and he's doing all kinds of complex work
on the kit. It'd be easy for someone who doesn't know any better to confuse him
for a dude who just knows "Hip-Hop Drumming" but anyone with some sense can see
he's so much more than that, he spices up those Hip-Hop Grooves by pulling heavily from
Funk, Jazz Fusion, Soul, Gospel, Jazz etc. He's a bad, BAD Motherfukker on those drums.

Even worse than Oxnard?
My pops is from Philly and I grew up listening to Gamble & Huff era Philly Soul and there’s something really off putting about Silk Sonic almost like they’re parodying that style. Maybe it’s just me.
I actually like Oxnard but It’s his weakest solo effort….

While I agree it's off-putting, I dont think it's because of parody. I think they're genuinely paying homage to those older styles. I think their problem is that they're writing music in a pro-tools driven, time aligned world, the same world where not only is that a song writing reality but they're seeking to write "quotable" , "meme-able" lyrics. Inevitably it leads
to song writing which isn't close to what it seeks to emulate.

A very close situation is with Bruno and the funk he did. He isn't "Prince" and when he did his homage to Minneapolis funk, it became painfully obvious.

In isolation it's okay, I'd even venture to say it's pretty good but when put it next to their inspirations, they fall pretty flat.

he not even the biggest RnB star in his own group

:mjlol:
This here.

Mad talented dude, and he still hasn't broken through with everyday listeners. He's got all the push from the labels and media, awards too. But I don’t ever hear anyone speaking about him. You're the GOAT when your sh*t is everywhere. He's been at it forever and still seems like he's trying to break through, accolades and all that.

:wow:

making culturally/politically relevant joints and it's still jammin is rare. Stevie, Marvin and those of that ilk did that

I been following him before he changed his name to Anderson paak
I first heard his joint "Bob James" on a TiRon and Ayomari compilation. That got a lot of burn from me. Whole tape was fire
