I personally think higher education is going to be a bigger arena online in the near future. We're seeing some of it, but more and more companies are starting to find out people without degrees, but who have gone on to learn from materials online are the real deal.
Think of how many people are learning to code from online classes, even better than the ones who go to university are.
As far as networking goes, meetup.com gets together plenty of people in the tech world.
I say a lot of the hard sciences/stem fields will push to this sooner or later as well.
A degree may mean you've passed a bunch of exams, but even when I was taking upper division physics classes, I've seen some major grade curves and people passing who really should not have.
I personally think only the medical fields because it remains so hands-on is the major requirement of a degree in all STEM fields. Some people can solve problems, but performing surgery is a completely different beast.
