Is any degree actually "worthless"?

I personally think higher education is going to be a bigger arena online in the near future. We're seeing some of it, but more and more companies are starting to find out people without degrees, but who have gone on to learn from materials online are the real deal.

Think of how many people are learning to code from online classes, even better than the ones who go to university are.

As far as networking goes, meetup.com gets together plenty of people in the tech world.

I say a lot of the hard sciences/stem fields will push to this sooner or later as well.

A degree may mean you've passed a bunch of exams, but even when I was taking upper division physics classes, I've seen some major grade curves and people passing who really should not have.

I personally think only the medical fields because it remains so hands-on is the major requirement of a degree in all STEM fields. Some people can solve problems, but performing surgery is a completely different beast.

First you have to decide what it is the purpose of higher education for you...

Is it job training so you can be attractive to an employer and have a decent wage?

Or is it is so you can enrich your mind?

Degrees aren't worthless, the person holding it is.

I have a sociology degree, but I know how to work it into different industries. Worked at a nonprofit in social services, got up to executive level. From there, been able to work in private sector in unrelated fields like travel and wildlife research. You gotta know how to market yourself.

Worked in a art museum. This is a lie.
your boss had an art degree? and what exactly did you do in the museum?
being an employed photographer, i've never met anyone who said anything about their degree or asked me for a degree. maybe my experience is just different

I got friends majoring in telecommunications and you can't even get internships with production companies without being in college :beli:
well an internship is usually for some sort of credit or to prove yourself to someone else, yes that makes sense.

and its 2017, idk how you walk into a studio and say "here's my film degree" and your actual film WORK not be whats desired or someone turn down that work because you dont have a degree
i know so many people without film like degrees working in their industry because they produce, and the people with the degrees doing shyt that has nothing to do with their degree. and they got those jobs off the strength of them just going to college. in that regard i can understand how a random degree can be useful
the only people who have asked me for a degree in photography have been bullshyt child portrait studios, so i guess if thats the kind of odd jobs around a creative industry you're talking about, fine. but i was speaking more on a building and prosperous level

@milobased

I worked as a gallery attendant. My boss had an art degree. The directors and curators had art degrees. Some of the gallery attendants had or were pursuing some type of art degree.

You definitely have to know art when being a curator. Not sure what kind of photography you do. But I do know the curators and people worked in the shop had to know art becuase we had old and valuable art in our museum. Especially when alot art is loaned to museum.

Also in a art museum there is a lot of rules and policies. If you have certain pieces in a museum you have to follow insurance policy's and guidelines or you can't house or borrow stuff like the Da Vinci's. You have to have The building at a certain temperature. Many Art museums host events so you have to have guidelines for that as well. People don't realize the little details and what goes behind housing old artifacts and art. You have to report and log patron touches and changes of the art you have and or borrowed.

I've been thinking :patrice:

If somebody has a scholarship to school, and their passion is to run an art museum or teach art history... wouldn't an Art History degree be worth it to them?:jbhmm:

Some degrees might be worth-less, but as far as I know none of them are completely worthless.

Don't listen to these cats. Its all about what you want your degree to do for you. If you want it to just open doors to opportunities. Just about ANY degree will do that.

But if you have a very distinct life plan and know what you want to do then get that specific degree.

nikkas up here thinking that "oh just love Art and get with some money people and you can curate a museum"...uh nah breh. Chances are without that degree you didnt' have ACCESS to those money people to begin with. Degrees may not seem like it but they have social capital around them if you know how to swing it.

It may not make everything easier, but it for damn sure make shyt alot harder to NOT have one :manny:
