I think it's more about the school and network. For example, if you major in communications at liberty university more than likely you're screwed. Now, if you major in communications at Howard university you probably are in a better position to make a career out of it.

an art degree isnt going to help you open an art museum. money and loving art will

and you pretty much nailed it, most of these worthless degrees like art are just used for other people to teach art

a film degree is useless. most jobs that rely on creativity and money, the degrees are useless

You don't know much about Art Degrees, do you?

Economics past the undergraduate level stops being the nonsense "supply and demand curve" foolishness pushed early-on.
It gets incredibly technical, heavy calculations, advanced theory, etc.
I know. I wished I took it more seriously but here I am. A filmmaking slash teacher.

No, I wouldn't say any degree is completely worthless, in some cases just having a degree (regardless of what it's in) is the difference between an interview and getting your resume tossed.

That said, obviously some degrees pay off much more than others in the job market.

Just about everything outside of most STEM and like accounting (w/ certs). Unless, you went to a top school, all that other shyt won't get you far unless you got a great network.

Best pick up a trade if that other shyt ain't for ya.
yea but yall kinda buggin. there are places you wont get hired or advance unless you have a degree. even if the degree is unrelated they will still expect you to have something

no, the only way it becomes a negative is if you pay out your ass for it, even then its not worthless since it still puts you ahead of non degree holders

No degree is "worthless". Like OP said, it depends on what your goal is.

But too many people go to school not knowing what they want out of it, end up with debt and a less marketable degree.

I've been thinking :patrice:

If somebody has a scholarship to school, and their passion is to run an art museum or teach art history... wouldn't an Art History degree be worth it to them?:jbhmm:

Some degrees might be worth-less, but as far as I know none of them are completely worthless.

They should major in business managment and minor in art history. Or double major. Along with doing lots of internships.

Lots of jobs require a degree, even the most basic ones now, so it isn't worthless. You just need to make sure you do internships so you can have experience in your field.

Isn't accounting mathematics though

No, it's not STEM. It's a part of the College of Business Administration. Along with finance, marketing, managment, information and decision sciences, and entrepreneurship. Business communication, advt is included at some schools as well.

You guys think to small.

An African American studies major can work in government, politics, social services etc,

If you are an employer and you have an open position for a community service director for a black community, who are you hiring the African American studies major or the geology major?

I know I'm taking this out of context but if that's the case why do all these jobs require a degree...

So in that sense, College is about getting a job...

College is absolutely about getting a job. No one thinking practically these days is going to go to invest their time and take out a small fortune in loans and have no expectations on getting a job. I mean schools even have classes and seminars about preparing for the workforce. Companies wouldn't visit campuses and interview the students if it wasn't about getting a job....

I get what koven is saying, but the concept of college has changed decades ago.

I got friends majoring in telecommunications and you can't even get internships with production companies without being in college :beli:
