Is Classic R&B and Gospel music really white folks-repellant?

More specifically, they have an aversion for RnB/soul that leans too heavy into black American gospel styles.. especially vocally

They’d run from this sort of sound/musicality..

That’s why Jazmine Sullivan would never have the crossover appeal of an Adele.. not just because of her skin color, but her brand of musicianship.. it’s too close to the gospel roots.

That’s why Clive tried to water down Whitney’s gospel influence.

There’s a white musician at this moment doing PJ Morton covers on Social Media. Y’all live in different realities. A lot of white ppl mess with gospel leaning RnB. There’s nothing “too soulful” or “too black” in the internet era where music and popularity isn’t dictated by a narrow medium.

Throw this on and I'm sure it would clear some cacs out the room:

If you never had a family member playing old gospel music off a wooden AM radio in the kitchen you wasn't there

I remember this commercial …

Who in the hell left the gate open … :wow:

If your granny didn’t have Mahalia and Ms Shirley Cesar playing constantly you can’t relate …

I actually acknowledge that there’s fringe groups of whites folks that appreciate and are influenced by the artistry and musicianship of black gospel music including ppl like Yebba, Clark Beckham, Mackenzie, those two white dudes from Pentatonix, Tori Kelly even did a gospel album with Kirk Franklin.. these are mostly scattered anomalies that grew up with close ties to the art form or are musicheads themselves
Everyone can exist on their little island in the internet/streaming era..I feel you on that, I was assuming OP was talking about the mainstream dominant music market as it encompasses all of pop culture in general.. I’m talking about conglomerate institutions like radio, streaming playlists, label culture etc

The ones that want to know will figure it out, ie pawgs, dreadhead white boys, chet hanks, skaters etc.

Other than that, who cares? I don't try to learn metal and bluegrass.

All you gotta do is look at the quality of music in both genres compared to the previous generation. Them crackers ain’t signing them soul singers anymore. Now we stuck with this watered down BS.

No, I saw Charles Bradley in concert when he was touring before he passed and there were alot of younger yt folks in the audience. I think with them hipsters pushing a resurgence of vinyl so heavy they go out in search of those acts that play small venues. It's not like artists are playing in juke-joints anymore so you not gonna have a completely black audience.

I guess you don’t live in the south. There are cities where folks can perform here and the crowd is all black

Cacs had a problem with this song if my memory serves me correctly. They may have tried to ban it in Virginia or something.
