Is drafting an Offensive Lineman with the 1st overall pick a waste of a draft pick?

@CrimsonTider

who would you take first overall?

1st I would have never hired Reid and traded for Alex Smith.

But, I'm trading down and taken a QB.

if nobody would trade for the pick and I got to go into the season with fukking Alex Smith I guess I'm taking the best DE i the draft.

pass rushing OLB's are more Dynamic in an 3-4, and Brandon Albert might be going to the Dolphins.

why not take a LT with the 1st pick?

I've long said that LT is becoming the most overrated position in football. More and more teams are using the WCO and quicker 3 step drops for their QB's to get rid of the ball quickly. The short passing game has become more prevalent, thus a lot of teams are using those short throws in place of running the ball. This negates the position.

A LT isn't winning you a football game. If you have the #1 overall pick, chances are that your team sucks. Even if you draft an all pro LT with that 1st pick, your team will still continue to suck. An elite LT makes your team as a whole just marginally better. Meanwhile, an elite pass rusher, corner, QB, etc. changes the entire dynamic of a team.

Look at the elite LT's in the league. Now look at how many wins/losses they were responsible for. Joe Thomas is the best LT in the game and his team sucks. Jake Long was the best LT in the game before that and we still sucked.

Meanwhile, look at the last 5-10 Super Bowl winners and tell me where they drafted their starting LT at the time.

I can see where dudes who say otherwise are coming from, but this year is different in regards to KC likely drafting Joeckel. Problem is, Joeckel isn't the next Orlando Pace/Willie Roaf/Walter Jones/Boselli, etc. Matter of fact, he's not even the consensus best LT in the draft. There's a lot of dudes who do this for a living who prefer Eric Fisher. And some will tell you that Lane Johnson has the highest ceiling of all the LT's in the draft. So it's not like Joeckel is some once in a generation talent.

If he's not even a sure thing, why not A) Trade down or B) select a player at #1 who, if he reaches his ceiling, will actually make a difference in terms of wins/losses.

This is a good post. However, this draft is just weird. The Chiefs arent even the typical awful team picking first. The Raiders, Jaguars and Jets all have significantly worse rosters than the Chiefs.

No one's going to trade up to 1 to take a pick no one seems to want anyway. Chiefs are just in a tough spot. However if they think Dion Jordan is a super star then I'd take him over the blue chip LT. If they dont, then go the safe route.

I wouldn't take an O lineman with #1 overall. That pick comes every 10-15 years and if you have that pick your QB situation is terrible. I would trade a position player for an o lineman or trade back in the draft if there was no qB worth taking.

Depends on that years draft stock. You might find someone who went below the radar that is determined to succeed and will flourish if given the opportunity. Everyone who's on the board already has a lifetime of experience put into getting there, if they're willing to put in the work absolutely anything is able to be accomplished in 3 years time.

as long as he's 300 pounds with his AWR rating being above above 90, you gon' be alright :youngsabo:

you hear it every year.

"*insert team name* should just trade down, and accumulate more draft picks"

as if theres loads of teams just clamoring to move up, and sacrifice valuable draft picks in the process

Depends on the team need and the state of the franchise .. I mean Jake Long was supposed to be the franchise LT for Miami and he bolted for the Rams
