i've noticed on this site (the majority) of people that say it's a classic either got into Hip Hop through Em or in that era that say it's a classic. i don't personally see how it is, the unnecessary skits, low replay value and a lot of the subject matter is extremely dated (name dropping/dissing celebs & pop stars is always a bad idea). the rhyme schemes & technical ability shown on songs like Criminal are nothing to laugh at but i just can't fukk with the skits & joints like Drug Ballad i always thought sounded like an SSLP left over.
I got into hip hop from puff daddy's no way out. I was young...born in 91 so obviously Eminems run was special to my generation and that plays a part.

Regardless, that album literally has all the qualifications of a classic to me from the promotion to the classic singles to the critical reception to the commercial reception to some of the classic album cuts like I'm back (ems best song), Who Knew and Kill you. Its 100% classic even if I don't play it much anymore. That shyt had white parents and public activists acting stupid as shyt too...that show impactful it was

How yall on this site calling shyt like Good Kid Maad City classic and saying Marshall Mathers LP aint a classic. Yall fukked up man

Digable Planets - Reachin

Never heard this album before. I'm at Pacifics right now and it's pretty cool. Not my type of thing for regular rotation but certainly nice in its own way.

camp lo - uptown saturday night.

Coolie High is one of my favorite joints of all time. ALL TIME

For all the people who are saying that MMLP is classic because it's their generation... I can't really buy that. I heard rap in the mid 90s through my dad, but I didn't get into it heavy until I heard Mase's Harlem World. That's the first album I copped with my own money. I remember that being the turning point for me like "damn, hip hop is the best shyt in the world. I'm gonna listen to more." So there's nostalgia involved.

Do I think Harlem World is classic, knowing what I know now? No. And it's not close either. Good album though.

Love this album to death fam. I really liked Digable back in the day but I grew up around nikkas that weren't exactly on that chill, tree huger shyt. I had to get my east coast fix primarily from YO or Rap City and their singles were always great but I didn't hear the full LP til years later. I would say that probably plays into why it sounds fresh to me, but really that production and the rhymes, and the whole meta vibe is just really where I'm at and who I am as opposed to a more violent environment.

Plus it's an album I can listen to with my kids, I cherish that.

It's a different kind of nostalgia depending on what age you are though. Like...I be seeing nikkas talking about "I was a big eminem fan...at 10" :skip:

I was listening to Hammer and Kris Kross when I was 10. By the time i'm 17-18 my musical tastes were pretty much set, I wasn't discovering Hip Hop or "growing out" of anything, I was actually getting deeper in love with the craft which is why cats like em resonated with me. Not just the skill set but the ability to be honest and vulnerable with it.

So, it's been decided then considering the poll?

*insert something about 47 of those votes being cacs*

It's only nostalgia of being between the ages of 10-17 during Em's prime run that makes you think any of these albums are greatness. I will always enjoy MMLP and SSLP because at the time I played them so much they are just a part of me, but when I look back and think about the subject matter and style and focus from my adult ears it has no redeeming qualities. Em was fortunate to come at the time that he did.
