There was a hilarious twitter thread providing evidence that the mom was the villain of the show. I'll see if I can find it in my bookmarks.
She was on some strong independent sassy black women smh

whats happening needs to have a few words with all 3 of y’all :unimpressed:

nah son, that show was fukking terrible. The whole cast (literally the whole cast except raj’s wife in later seasons) was fukking ugly to the point you had to question how the hell they even got on TV, the acting was horrendous, it looked low budget as hell and the plot lines were corny.

what’s happening is a c or d tier black sitcom sitting in the same realm as homeboys from outer space.

Of the most popular Black comedy sitcoms from the 70's, "What's Happening" definitely came in last place. It was also the last one of the 70's. Believe it or not, it was a spinoff from the legendary movie "Cooley High". A childhood friend of ours, whose family was from Chicago, told us this. It took a minute to believe it, until I noticed it listed on the credits years later. But if he said "Good Times" was that spinoff, I would have believed him.

The funniest part of "Whats Happening" was watching Rerun running behind that truck, every time it came on.

I still don't find "Damn, Damn, Damn" funny. I could never see anybody making comedy out of a wife breaking down after the funeral of her husband, even if it was acting. That was the most emotional scene I ever saw from what was suppose to be a comedy, the funniest comedy on television at the time. All I remember was their father, James Evans, the key to that sitcom, was really gone.

But I really didn't see that episode on tv. We were at our part time evening job, working as teenagers, sorting mail for IBM in a mail room in Bethesda, listening to that episode live on this radio that picked up tv channels. Listening to Florida break down on that last scene stuck with me. I can't see anybody old enough to remember seeing that episode live, constantly turning that part into a joke.
