Is having a degree better than not having one?

Any degree gets you consideration. I work for a company that won' teven look at you without a degree. If you do get in the door they won't promote you past a certain level without one. And, people are working in fields completely unrelated to their degrees too.

Thing about degrees is the days of "get one get a job" are over. You need a game plan.

Im gonna disagree with u because the education field is a joke right now. Schools don't even teach science anymore. Public schools are so focused on getting funding, they focus on reading and math. Until the education system is fixed and they focus on producing well rounded students, I wouldn't dare teach.

You won't find an entire state of legislators with kids enrolled in a public school. That's your first problem.

My 2 main problems are that kids are being passed along and also teaching to the test. Of course my mindset may be diffferent because i went to private school. if you couldn't do the work or your grades were bad, you had to repeat. Now if kids have to repeat a grade, there's an uproar. Also why would someone be a science teacher if the schools WON'T LET U TEACH SCIENCE. Administration will say- you know we really need to focus on these state tests. so how about you teach 20 min of science and focus the rest on drilling this reading and math into their brains.

It has to be the right degree coupled with the right skills and experience. Thats the triangle offense of landing a 1st job. From there on it's all about skills, experience and self-marketing.

iv considered military. that and teaching are my last resorts. my gpa was way less than 3.0 so most professional schools are out of reach for me

In all honesty, you can explain your way out of a bad gpa if other aspects of yo ur grad school application are on point. I graduated from undergrad after 6 years of being in, having transferred to 3 different schools, taking up four different majors. I too was nervous about my academic profile when applying to grad schools because i went to so many schools and did poorly at 2/3 of them. I went on to get a master's in public health which I parlayed into a director level gig. I'll be 30 this year. What you have to do is figure out what makes you happy then transition to the work that fulfills that.

your GPA is likely to only matter at prestigious companies. more modest firms probably wont ask, and they are less likely to ask the more experience you get in the field. of course the catch 22 is how do you get that experience...

i also have a useless degree. over time things will get a little better or you may have to move out of state. i found my footing and am now doing something that doesnt require an education but pays decent and has been showing me a good amount of professional growth.

to the question of a degree being worth having, i will speak to the racial aspect: i would say too many black people have worthless degrees. unless you have a specific professional career path you are going into, college should be avoided. both in the studies i have seen and anecdotally in my own life, a BA/BS just puts black men on par with white HS grads who are sober and have a relatively clean criminal history. that's a hell of a price to pay to be treated like a basic white guy in the job market.

I would have never got my first job with out my degree, it's just a credential but companies use it as a HR filter so it's better to have one then not all other things being equal.
I notice you said you had a 2.x GPA, i think GPA makes a HUGE difference. When I graduated the students who had 3.0- 4.0 GPA had nice jobs lined up months before graduation. It took me 4 months AFTER graduation to find my first job (2.8GPA) . Some companies wouldn't even talk to me at the college job fairs cause I didn't have 3.0, so it's really about having the degree AND doing well I think

I think its all situational. Depends on your degree, what school, gpa, the connections u make etc etc. My sister has her masters in nursing got a good paying job and one of the best hospitals in chicago. But she has friends with the same degrees and cant get out of a nursing home. I went to university of Alabama in tuscaloosa and some of the people that I would have graduated with ( I was going to be a it major but i dropped out) some of them work at shytty jobs like apple store or office max or best buy with a whole lot of student loans to repay. I work for the railroad and make more than both my sister and my friends from school. a few of my other homies went to a program that gave them an internship(all It work) and they all were hired full time and making good money because of their certifications opposed to the degree they never got. I just think college is a waste of time now a days. Helll both my parents never used their degrees. In the next 15-20 years colleges will have to be free because people wont go unless they are going in the medical field

Op as a last resort - if you really can't find a decent occupation go teach English abroad. You can go to virtually any country and teach English they will pay for your room and board with a base salary of maybe 30K. Going to Asia might be the most lucrative. I know several people who have gone to Korea specially to teach English. But I believe there are teaching abroad programs in nearly every country. Brazil is also a popular destination. @DamienWayne

is $50 better then $5. The downside is a lot of people get degrees they dont use and end up in debt. trade school is a cheaper option and gives you real world skills. Im in the cannabis industry but if I had to I could work as a locksmith , a graphic designer or sound engineer.
