@MsBigHead didn't specifically say that they are trying to be black...she asked are they trying to be like another race/ethnicity? They could be trying to be hispanic.

I would say a definite yes to tanning. Pale women that tan are the same as dark women who bleach if you ask me.

In short, black men and women bleached because they were taught any and everything black was inferior and everything white was superior and perfect. In return, they straightened their hair and bleached their skin in order to not look black.

Whites because the system of white supremacy didn't put those limitations on them, never had to deal with those psychological battles.
