It can to a lesser extent be compared to bleaching in this case, because the media no doubt in league with cosmetic companies, make out that having pale skin is ugly or somehow inferior to having tanned skin. It is not unusual for a photo of a very attractive white girl who has her natural skin to be told in the comments' very pretty all she needs is a tan'. or some such.
Of course there might be deeper historial and psychological reasons for skin bleaching for instance,but the premise is the same, altering your skin or something else you were born with that defines your race by artificial means even if it can do physical harm and put you at risk. For one I bhave noticed that white women who excessively tan their skin seem to age prematurely,and it can also put you at risk of cancers.
