Is it possible to raise the level of HL discourse?

This election has brought out the worst in people, and not just here. And actually, for good reason. Any support for Trump automatically indicates something is wrong with you in some fashion, whether it be actual racism or cognitive dissonant delusion.

Part of the problem is that our poster base is small and very Balkanized. The same people talk about the same topics and that combined with the real consequences of this election makes emotions run high. When you know someone undocumented and care about them and their family and some moron is posting racist st0rmfr0nt memes about them in support of a candidate that denies their humanity you're going to feel some type of way.

When you have a group of posters who support a candidate that will hurt people you identify with or care about, whether it be black, brown, low income, Muslim, whatever, that makes people lash out.

It's also hard to have a conversation with people who intentionally obfuscate and insult, while maintaining a presence here in support of a candidate that clearly represents (to them), essentially, evil.

There is no dialogue to be had with Trumpset.

while i agree most of this is fair, i'd like to add that there was a lot of intellectual dishonesty where motherfukkers were throwing around 'if you dont support X, you must support X' and that type of bullshyt. just sitting out this election was an impossibilty, according to *a few* posters

the fact is that if and when trump is sworn in, this place will be able to return to talking about and dealing with facts. things that are actually being done (for better or worse) but not a bunch of fearmongering and projecting. which i look forward to

So many threads devolve into one-liners, posting smilies, pissing contests, and the willful ignoring of posters' arguments to create strawmen and misrepresentations.

It's easy to get pulled into that type of behavior because it is so prevalent. Sometimes I've been guilty of it myself.

In 2017 I'm trying to get away from that, even if it means blocking certain posters so don't get dragged down into the gutter .

Does anyone else want to commit to elevating their own discourse in HL and hopefully by doing so, elevate the subforum as a whole?

I don't think its a lost cause, maybe if we make a list for those who to ignore who are all along the political spectrum who refuse to engage in logical disucssion.

I haate the notion on this board that people seem to take offense and get angry and neg over difference of opinion.

it's almost like ppl have been surrounded by yes men their whole lives and the moment that someone disagrees with them it's the worst thing in the world so they get defensive and don't know how to handle it.

and ppl like to talk about critical thinking yet completely disregard any points someone else brings if they don't go in line with their thinking....how is that critical?

Another thing that is irritating, is when you ask someone to back up what they say with actual facts they run away, or just completely dismiss the person/argument altogether because they get stuck in a corner and have found out to be full of shyt.
