Well, no, pro boxers or any pro athlete period mastered the fundamentals at an early age. Not to discourage you, but to improve on speed and power comes directly from timing, breath control, and form.
Poor form makes you late and slow and footwork is the root for all things in boxing. Laggy legs and poor hip rotation will make you food. Bad cardio and/or poor breath control will make it worse.
Breathing is also important and adds fluidity to your movement, thus increasing your reaction time and that becomes a speed increase.
A year of solid practice with good coaches and a tough mental and physical regimen will certainly make you more capable in a year...If you spar 2-3 times a week you will be in great shape...
