JAMAICANS BARRED FROM OWN BEACHES: END THE BAN!
Imagine living on a beautiful island with picturesque beaches - but you’re not allowed to visit them.
That’s what life is like for Jamaicans, where less than 1% of the sandy coastline is open to the public. It’s a colonial legacy of the 1956 Beach Control Act, which grants private landowners extensive - almost exclusive - rights over coastal areas, effectively barring residents from enjoying their own shores.
As a result of this exclusion, prime beachfronts are predominantly reserved for private entities and foreign tourists, with Jamaicans marginalised in their homeland.
Under British rule, laws were instituted to favour the interests of the colonial power and its economic expansion at the expense of the local community. Although Jamaica achieved independence, these colonial-era statutes persist, perpetuating stark social and economic disparities.
This clip is part of a campaign calling for an end to the colonial-era beach law. In it, @mikaelaloach argues that denying locals access to their natural resources not only infringes upon their rights but also undermines their cultural heritage and identity.
It’s a prime example of exclusionary colonial practices creating systemic inequities impacting the quality of life of Jamaicans today, even after their so-called independence from the UK in 1962.

I experienced this first hand on a cruise ship stop in Ocho Rios. I had on a polo shirt with the name of one of the bays in Jamaica, only to be accosted by a Jamaican man speaking to me in patois and telling me I know I shouldn’t be on the beach. I was saved by my African accent.
On the bright side, it was a pleasant experience in the market place when they know you’re from the motherland.
I was quite sad to see the treatment of Jamaicans working for Asian store owners. The fear on their faces was palpable.
Anyway, it’s up to Jamaicans to decide their own destiny.

Jamaica did it to themselves. The worst thing that ever happened to that island was back in the mid 70s early 80s, were they allowed to install satellite dishes. It exposed Jamaicans to all kinds of derelict entertainment coming in from the States and Europe. There began the downward spiral where young people stop going to school, they were not interested in agriculture, even though that soil is so fertile. Due to the satellite dish everybody wanted to move to Kingston, the big City and become Scarface! Combine that with a corrupt government and police department over the years. Those Jamaicans that left the island and wanted to come back to retire heard that many who did never even lived a year on that island before being chopped up by a machete by their own people. It got to the point where some of them couldn’t even hire their own Jamaicans for housework because if you blinked twice everything in their damn house would be stolen. Residents had to start installing grill gates all over their home, just to protect themselves, it’s common for homeowners to walk around their own home with 1000 keys to unlock that door and unlock that cabinet because you can’t trust the help and you can’t trust people from the outside. Then the Jamaican Government being so corrupt, couldn’t use the brain resources of their own people who are actually very smart so could build resources they had to turn to the Chinese. Chinese people do not like Black people and Jamaica sold itself to the highest bidder. They don’t even own their own airline anymore. Air Jamaica used to be a fine airline, in fact, I believe they never in their history had a plane accident. They don’t own their ports they own nothing and China has been selling them plastic rice so Jamaica did it to itself.
Jamaicans, blinded by their prejudices and colorism , could’ve turned to significant Black American investors and Engineers - and don’t get it twisted when I tell you - there are significant and brilliant Black American Engineers and Business Executives that would’ve been all too happy to sit down with the Jamaican government and together build a cross-collateral deal that would have helped Jamaica and helped Black America. The agricultural opportunities between Black Americans and Jamaicans on that fertile soil offered limitless possibilities. You’re talking about two ethic groups that KNOW ABOUT AGRICULTURE, it’s in their blood. What lost opportunities, damn shame. China out numbers that island, it will be a millennia before they take it back.

This is a good example of why I say just because someone is black that doesnt mean I align with them. This law has existed for decades and there has been plenty of black ppl in leadership. Jamaicans shouldnt have to BEG for their “leaders” to do the right thing
