He was never a "oh shyt, it's Jason Witten" type TE. To be real, if Gronk retired this off season I'd put Gronk in before Witten.
And if Sharpe couldn't get in first ballot with all of his stats and 3 rings...I don't think Witten should especially with the backlog of great players still waiting.

There's no doubt Ed Reed and Gonzalez are getting in next year
If Tony Gonzalez gets in first ballot he would be the first TE to do it (I think) and I agree that he should be. I'm just saying shyt would look funny if Gonzalez doesn't get in first ballot and Witten is still being discussed. HOF voters made dudes like Kellen Winslow, Ozzy Newsome and Shannon Sharpe wait. It's a different time now and the value of the TE has been elevated so maybe the criteria is different but it's also possible that they stick to tradition or some shyt like that.

TO wasn't 1st ballot bc cacs thought he talked too much. It wasn't his production. Witten doesn't have those problems.

If Jason Witten didn't play his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys this wouldn't even be a discussion. Jason Witten is easily a 1st ballot hall of famer. Folks let their hate for the Cowboys cloud their minds and all sense and logic go out the window.
put it this way, Shannon Sharpe has nearly identical stats without the benefit of today's passing league plus 3 Super Bowl rings and still didn't get in on the first ballot
