Once it was confirmed to be spread amongst gay men they stopped the media coverage because they feared a backlash. LGBT don’t want to be the face of any disease even though they engage in the riskiest practices.

It's not as infectiousness compared to Covid or other pox diseases and it's already been stated who's the most at high-risk (gays) so health officials toned it down a bit which invoked the media to tone it down as well to prevent mass hysteria (reminiscent of the start of the HIV/AIDS era) and to avoid provoking discriminative attitudes towards LGBT citizens.
