fukk him. I barely listen to his stuff on the radio, cuz when it comes on I change the station. During the mtv awards when he was accepting an award I was like "who is the other white dude up there with him?" she was like "that's macklemore too. They are a group". A first I was like  then I was like "I guess so":yeshrug:. I swear pretty much up until today I thought macklemore was two people :manny:

This isn't about whether this guy is talented or not or has lyrics...

It's just fishy this guy came out of nowhere seemingly. He comes off as a gimmick to me.

All I'll ever see this him as is a white dude that co-opts the struggles of gay people without actually experiencing them

And using black music to make money. All the while putting both down simulatenously and turning them into a talking point.

The thing that gets to me about this guy is this; the LGBT community has put this guy on a pedestal for championing the rights of it (which isn't a bad thing). But there have been many other black rappers that have spoken out against homophobia before him...yet that somehow has gotten erased from history as this guy came onto the scene.

I feel that the people that listen to Macklemore WOULDN'T listen to someone like Eminem so he can't even be placed on his level or on the level of other white or black rappers or rappers period. In their eyes, ALL rap/hip-hop is violent, homophobic, misogynist, criminal, and every other negative term you can think of so they wouldn't even give it a chance.

Example: I was at a bar in Bushwick and I was talking to this older white woman (about 30 something) who was a fan of his and she said that Macklemore is the only rapper she ever listened to.

Didn't even know that Macklemore was a group lol! Anyway, the main reason is because he's marketable, non-threatening and makes catchy/"fun-loving" music so of course he's gonna get a major push. He also has major label support despite the independent thing. Labels understand that for all the Chief Keefs and Wiz Khalifas they push they also need safe rap music for the kids and parents who buy music for the kids. It's all calculated but not necessarily industry plant.

He's the perfect candidate for the LGBT to get behind because he's not actually gay so he won't scare away kids and parents but he makes music in support of them and every race, religion, etc. He's as safe as you can get. A win-win. Other rappers not so much. A lot of marketing dollars wether it be music, film ,or tv are targeted towards gays (Modern Family, Glee, etc.) so Macklemore is actually big business. It's in their interest to support him.

Dude been rapping since like 04. Albums and everything. Put in work for the Seattle Hip-Hop scene, and actually had a good following prior to Thrift Shop blowing up. I was actually a fan of his EP with Ryan Lewis that had the track where he talked about his lean addiction...shyt was a powerful ass track.

He does have backing from Warner Brothers though, through ADA. The Heist's promotion was pretty much handled through this. He's not a meteoric unknown rise though, his name before Thrift Shop popped was built independently for the most part.

Imma be honest, I didn't hear about Macklemore till I saw him on 106 with a big ass coat in the backroom. But his first album came out in 2000.

He's Independent, he pays Warner Brothers for marketing and promotion for each single, they aint taking a cut, he's basically outsourced these services to them for a payment, and in turn he gets the access and push for his singles that a major label artist would. Honestly I don't know why the majority of artists don't do this.

I'm not a fan of his music, but I have to respect his grind, I remember homies on facebook posting his music a couple years back. Also I respect the fact that his new single "White Lines" which I heard on the radio this morning features Schoolboy Q, it's dope he pushed that joint, hopefully it'll help Q get that album out.
