Musical genius is not a literally true term, but in terms of some musicians just having endless creativity and finding it really easy to put a dope composition together? He falls into that category.

Hes a virtuoso of rap, like Coltrane was to the sax. I think if Meth had decided to produce, play drums etc you would see the same gift, like how Nas dad said Nas was a prodigy with the trumpet until he got bored and rap started taking his time up.

He did here and there...

“That was back in the days when I would even work the board. I did all the mixing and mastering on my second album. I did all the echos, the beat dropping out, and coming back in. RZA used to let me do that shyt a lot. I was supposed to go in a whole different direction. It was just that towards the middle, I was like, ‘Nah. I’m not as interested as I used to be.’

“Like I made the beat to the St. Ides. song ‘Special Brew.’ RZA sampled the drums, but that’s me playing the keyboard on that original St. Ides shyt. I just don’t do it often because I’m lazy. I did ‘Judgement Day’ too. I put that together. Mind you, I didn’t sample any of the music. I just put it together the way I liked it.

I knew about St Ides, but Judgement Day is interesting. I would have previously thought 4th basically did that, but it also doesn't sound like a 4th Disciple beat either.

Judgement Day is a co-production w/ 4th same way St Ides was co-prod w/ RZA. It's properly credited on the album:

Judgement Day
Co-producer – 4th Disciple
Mixed By – Nolan "Dr. NO" Moffitte*
Producer – Method Man
Producer [Additional Production By] – Tyrone Fyffe
Recorded By – Steve Sola, Tim Donovan
Written-By – C. Smith*, S. Bougard*

Yeah I know, just often when a rapper produces the track I'm not thinking they actually did much. This seems like Meth was responsible for the direction and 4th probably just polished it up. It has a unique sound so would have been interesting to see what could have happened if Meth kept at it.

For example if you look at tracks Ghostface produced, they're pretty basic samples.

Really weird that hes not able to put out a solid solo project for so many years despite probably being the most popular member of the Clan and whatever cultural relevancy his acting brings

hes still passionate, he can spit with his peers, just doesnt make sense...

and i know it wouldnt do numbers but still feel theres room for it

we aint gonna be around forever Meth...

IIRC he said from the beginning that the whole solo star thing wasn't what he was aiming at, so that probably translates in the energy/focus he puts in those solo albums. I firmly believe that some guys just work better in groups. For me Deck falls in that category too. Has nothing to do with lyrical talent/flow either.

Should Meth be saying he interpolated all those different songs? Labels are always down to go after publishing when sample snitches unearth long kept secrets.

Genius is used too much in the arts and it is subjective as fukk compared to the sciences.

But if you want Method Man to be a genius he is full stop. He is a writer first and foremost with his delivery can be seen as genius.

depends who u ask for snoop...he has 6 solid albums imo

meth eh... he was able blend in with the wu..crazy that dirty put 2 albums better than anything meth could put out ...n one album dirty literally was repeating himself lol..

reggie noble carried meth on everything they did
i count no limit top dogg and doggfather as well, but i am beyond done with snoop dogg these days

i even let the katy perry shyt go. i let his metallica tribute go. and i even let that godawful dogg shyt monday night football theme go... sorta

the monday night football theme in particular really bothers me. they took everything mediocre about american culture and mashed it together to create 1:40 of pure butt cheeks :scusthov:

music this bad genuinely offends me. i want to hurt whoever put this together.

but the rise of jelly roll has taught me not to respect any rapper ever. they will do a track with jelly roll for a bag

Missionary has gotta be one of the most disappointing releases ever in retrospect

i mean could you imagine 1992 ice cube getting the achy breaky heart cac on the hook? cause thats pretty much what that shyt is!

images

you are wrong about method man/redman, but i used up all of my anger bytching about jelly roll :damn:

Talib Kweli has penned for Drake. I have never heard a full Kweli album
yea neither has anyone else... one of the most overrated emcees EVER

man needs to get a life and stop trolling on the internet

i realize the irony in that last sentence

I saw him play Gymnopédies, 1. Lent et douloureux by Erik Satie on a Peruvian Pan Pipe outside a mall in Staten Island once

He's a dope emcee but musical genius is a stretch especially considering he doesn't play, arrange or produce actual music

He just pieced together different lines from different songs which tons of rappers do
I feel you, but at the same time, what he's doing isn't not producing either...if that makes any sense. There can be a really fine line between writing and producing, and to me what Meth was talking about in that video really blurs the line.
