Is Michigan the only marquee program to not play for a title?

this is the 17th year of an established title game, with pretty much every program with history checking in over time.

Washington and Colorado had lots of late 80's to early 90's success, but I really wouldn't put them in that category. thoughts?

claimed a co-title in 97, but played a Wazzu team that finished 9th. #2 NEB beat #3 UTenn, which was clearly the bigger game of the 2. that's not a knock on UM there was no system in place

the BCS was far from perfect, but this was the year that people had had it with the old school coaches vs AP poll crap

Makes sense. I remember that one year (06?) when they needed to beat OSU to get in and Beanie Wells ran for that long TD. Went to the Rose Bowl and got killed by USC. SMH.

Meh.....I kinda see them like the Texas A&M status in college football. Not really close to being one of the best programs.

Big time programs of the BCS era: Bama, OSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, Michigan, Florida, Auburn, USC, Texas, LSU. FSU was the king early in the BCS, then at the very end.

Maybe I forgot 1 or 2, but that's pretty much it. UCLA is not in the discussion.
