your description of the conversation is pretty misleading.

I never said any of them are still relevant musically.(im gonna vote "yes" tho, so I can access the results.)

and when you asked me whose been relevant longer, I said that I never saw e-40 as being a relevant rapper period. more of a fringe artist with a rabid die-hard fanbase.

and for the record, even if I did view e-40 as being relevant at any point, you cant compare rappers from different decades like that. the game was structured differently.
40 is from the same era as both of them. In addition he's had relevant music in every era since then also.

So E-40 didn't help put the Bay on the map yet he's known as the Ambassador of the Bay and is probably the first rapper people think of when they think of the bay...you got it chief.

the bay was firmly entrenched on the map years before we even heard of an e-40.

and he was never a star, nor did he do anything to advance the bay's popularity when he came along. in fact, you could argue that he hurt the bay's standing with a lot of outside markets.

so again, I ask, what the hell did he do to be considered a pioneer?

the "ambassador of the bay" bullchit is such a worthless title. LOL. he prolly gave that title to himself and ran with it.

youre handing out participation trophies.

he wasn't contributing along with them. he was just around.

he didn't become nationally known until YEARS LATER, and when he did, he didn't move the needle at all.

and like i said before, yall use terms like "relevant" way too freely.

E-40 is an anomaly. His flow was so ahead of its time that it sounds better now than ever. They might be more legendary but not relevant. 40 has more hits for one and he has never sounded :flabbynsick:

However I'm more likely to listen to a Rakim album but an E-40 single. They give me different things with the music.

lol ok fair enough my G it's not fonzarellis best effort

but hey every rapper in the game worth a damn got a couple bricks they caught. nas, hov, 50, em, kris, run and darryl.... you name 'em

Yeah but 40's is next level trash and illustrates why he's not to be taken as seriously as Krs or Rakim. He's a lovable, porky pig sounding, fat goofball.

theyre prolly his friends and will say that just to be nice.

and im very much familiar with bay area rap.

the problem is, youre arguing from a homer perspective - which is something you cant do if youre listing off pioneers.

if he was a pioneer for the bay, that means he either:
A.) helped put the bay on the map.
B.) helped take the bay scene to greater heights and brought in more outside fans.

e-40 clearly didn't do any of this, so why are yall crowning him as a pioneer?
He's a slang pioneer how about that. He put bay area slang on the map. He also put Vallejo on the map.

I imagine backpacks, carhartts and timberlands play a significant role in the differentiation of these 2 "markets"

most of eric b & Rakim's hits were of the party variety actually. youre painting the picture of a different era.
BDP had a lot of those as well.
and they have more across-the-board hits than e-40.

40 usually just hits when he attached himself to something "hot" and I think that's what @Tom Foolery is getting at.
rakim & krs aren't gonna be out here hit-chasing and trying to do songs with wack rappers just because theyre on the radio. theyre not out here breaking their neck to be seen either. and they don't need to.

you shouldn't even want to be all in the limelight rapping if youre in your 50s. just eat off your legacy and tour. that's is if your legacy is really like that.

ask anybody outside of California what a Vallejo is, they'll think youre talking about a foreign country or some oral sex.

his influence on slang is vastly overrated on here, but he does have quite a bit of slang that he never got credit for so we can settle for that.
