I think it's a classic but can understand why some think it narrowly misses the mark.

I'll say 4/5. Mainly because the production on some songs was :yawn: and some choruses were :usure:.

Not even being biased because I like both artists, but I feel the publications rated Stillmatic on the same level as The Blueprint because of the rivalry at the time and they were scared to choose sides.

this..i listened to illmatic the 1st time years ago(in college) to see why do hip hop nerds put it on such a pedestal and was disappointed by it's lack of substance....the beats put me to sleep and half the time I wasn't aware wtf nas was rapping about though I suspect it was the typical NY backpack rap themes(i'm the illest yo, sucker mcs, etc) type ish...where as while i'm not sure I consider it classic stilmatic was solid and atleast was one of the few mainstream rap albums relatively recently to have black conscious message.

try to be different, for the sake of bein different brehs :camby:

average album with outdated production
def not a classic

shyt like this kills me.... This is a borderline retarded statement.

Yes, I do get that production can sound outdated, but that doesn't take away the fact that something is classic... Sometimes that's what make an album classic....

So you mean to tell me albums like Nevermind, ‎Appetite for Destruction, Rhythm Nation, and Purple Rain aren't classic because they have dated production??? U telling me Joan Jett, Motley Crue, etc.. don't have classic because the production is dated??? Only in hip hop, I swear....

Look, I don't play illmatic close to the amount of times that I play Doggystyle or the Chronic, but in no way or form can I deny it's a classic

Timeless and outdated is a big difference
NY State of mind is timeless, Ether is outdated
