I'd say your location is maybe the single biggest factor. I know a lot of people in the music industry, although I'm not in the industry myself. You could have all the talent in the world, but people need to find you. Being in a more popular city helps out the most, even with social media.
If your location is a positive, then breaking in isn't that difficult but is tricky. It depends on who you associate with - that's the key. People need to find like-minded people and work on creating something.
Here's the catch: most people are told not to associate "non-professional" individuals. But what are musicians and artists mainly?
A lot of musicians don't ascribe to the 9-5 typical persona, so most people don't necessarily associate with them. Granted there are a few people who will work 9-5 and pursue their hobbies on the side, but the average artistic/musician is a starving artist who doesn't want to conform/settle. If you work with them, they're usually the "weirdo".
