I'll go back 100 years and say Jack Johnson. Man broke the color barrier for the heavyweight championship, and the way he kept beating up white men to retain the crown while smiling with his gold teeth to a crowd that wanted to lynch him must've invoked powerful feelings of black excellence. At the same time, he wasn't interested in letting other brothers have a shot at the title nor being a hero to the black community and paraded white women around as trophies.
The ripple effects were felt for over 20 years as it wasn't until Joe Louis came around that another black man got a shot at the title. Louis was persuaded into having little to no personality publicly while never being so much as photographed in public with white women. Johnson himself hated on Louis every chance he could get instead of supporting him. Man left a very complicated yet fascinating legacy
