Yea I think these two things are it for me. It's not as though he's a terrible rapper, I just never felt inspired to listen to him for an extended period of time. He just seems like he's trying too hard to be cool.

Sometimes people can't look past their biases to see the talent. I think Rick Ross is a disgusting human being and pumps nothing but poison through his music, but you'll never see my walking around saying he's not a good rapper, because he is.

Separate the bias from the facts.

Here's the thing, everything you wrote can be turned around and used as a comment on J.cole and it'll be perfectly apt.
Pop Jodeci freestyle on right now, listen to Drake's verse, and wait till J.cole comes on, notice how the energy drops and how completely bland he sounds next to drake.

Cole isn't doing anything groundbreaking, there isn't a song on Born sinner that will be held to as a classic 15 years from now (ditto on wale's album).

This need to try to separate Cole as if he's some sort of elite artist is funny to me. He's a good rapper that stands out in a mediocre generation (like Wale to a lesser extent)

I can see if it's Drake fans clowing Wale for this, But Cole fans?

So, even if he says something clever it is outdated and plus offkey.
Which means it will always lack convincability and fail to create critical acclaim type nods.
