I think it's interesting that roots dropped this and de la dropped stakes is high in what I consider the best year ever in hip hop album wise lol. I keep this in mind whenever I wanna call the current gen of music ass. oldheads were calling my favorite music ass too
Me Myself and Eye came out in ‘89-90

De La made a career out of crying about the state of hip hop

I used to love her came out in ‘94

Common too to a lesser extent

Which was addressing the exploitation that was going on THEN. It was focused on that particular era if Hip Hop. It may fit now, but it wasn't addressing the future.

I'm not even sure what you cats are arguing any more.

All the songs listed were addressing the direction of things. Things continued to go in that direction, and here we are.

What makes it a contradiction wasn't the supposed fraudelence, but that Jay-Z was one of the biggest culprits of commodifying the genre and selling out. Everything that ?uestlove complains passionately about, Jay was one the flag bearers; Jay just happened to be really fukking talented too.

Yea this was the trick bag. You can’t call out Jay for being commercial without exposing yourself. It’s something nggas on this site don’t realize. Dudes want jay to be fukin Vanilla Ice :heh: this pop icon who true ‘artists’ don’t respect…nah ngga. Jay is dog nice and while going triple platinum still outrapped your favorite backpack or conscious or underground rapper.

Dead prez hell yea remix, Get By remix :scusthov:He spanked prime Most and Def. If you wanna go underground he bodied MOP on Put it in the air.

And a/ the Roots ironically Black Thought came in the game in a group with Beans, who goes on to be like peanut better and jelly on tracks with jay :mjtf: Goofy nggas just want to imagine Jay as some herb. Nah ngga

Did I not say Jay wasn't also super fukking talented???? When he wanted to he could make art, but he also knew it was a business and would mail shyt in just as often as he really locked down and tried. And made no apologies about it. That's howthe same man that made The Blueprint and The Black Album also makes a Vol. 3 or Blueprint 2

Above the fray.
OP
The answer is YES. In roughly the same era, The Roots, De La Soul, and a few other acts stopped making great records and starting making op-eds/critiques of OTHER acts disguised as songs.
Too heavy handed.
