Issa does work with a lot of other black creatives. She always has a ton of black writers and directors, just because they aren’t household names that would catch your eye doesn’t mean she’s not doing the work. And she’s working on a new show with the Gus from Southside (who also got their show cancelled by Max when Warner bought it)

This thread is wild fam, it’s crazy how it turned into a hate thread for someone who makes sure there’s black people invloved in every level of the project.

Issa came in during an era where a lot of black millennials and black creators in general. Projects were getting green lighted and that era is over. At least for some…that was the era of Lena Waithe, Donald Glover, Jordan Peele, Rryan Coogler, etc. And projects like Dear White People, Lovecraft Country, Chewing Gum, She Got To Have It, basically every “new black” show/movie lol. After the writers strike, the anti woke movement, and AI. A lot of wells are running dry if you can’t adapt.

She blew up off of a web series turned show. Happened to be a hit. She was never that GREAT of an actor. That show just happened to represent dating to her generation.

She just has to get back to square one.

Great, but there's a difference between working with others and having your own studio where you don't have to worry about adhering to others, you can instead put your own stuff out whenever you want. It's like people get to a certain level just to still but up under someone else and adhering to their rules.

She's in position now to do what she wants, do it.

If she wants to be black focused, she needs to go to Black platforms. If she wants to make it big time, then she needs to expand her reach and her audience. You can’t do both at least not right now.

There is money for black shows on mainstream platforms, however there isn’t a blank check, so there will be fewer shows than the 10’s just like the 10’s were far fewer shows than the 90’s and early 00’s

Tone is someone who does nothing more than make videos talking down on every successful black person. Apu is a fan of Tone because apu also talks down on successful black people

I don’t think she’s papered up like that and the industry is contracting, not sure it makes sense to have your own studio just to be relegated to BET Her where you won’t get eyes or dollars to warrant making high level productions (not tubi / write 50 episodes at once Tyler perrry level stuff)

I don't have a problem with how she defines success for herself as that's her right. I also don't think that's a sustainable approach from a mental well being standpoint.

Nevertheless she's worked hard and is feeling that unavoidable plateau that happens in entertainment. The only way to really stay visible is having your own source of funding. Otherwise your art is only as valuable as what mainstream Hollywood says it is.
