Issa Rae says she doesn’t feels successful right now. Did the industry switch up on black content?

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Yet somehow Tyler Perry has been and is still eating through all of this. Looks like bruh playing the long game with what he was putting out there was the right move.
Let’s not act like him being a gay man making movies for the lowest possible denominator of black people, is what every other content creator wants to do

Mind you, this man built his shyt in theater for 2030 years doing the same thing before he even move to other content

Tyler Perry is an anomaly in every race

Aye all these Black actors, writers, producers, camera folk and all that, and ain't nobody hittin' up OWN, Aspire, Bounce, TVOne with original content? I mean, y'all so guapped up and got all these connects and ain't puttin' no new blunts in rotation?

Breh, that’s why when I hear these complaints from these black entertainers, I refuse to entertain their “struggle”.

All these connections, lower barrier to entry and yet they’re still begging for a seat at the table. I’m sick of hearing this shyt. They can literally shoot and edit a whole film on their iPhone.

This political climate should galvanize black entertainers to form like Voltron. But as always, the white man’s ice is colder. It’s better to fight for scraps than to make our own meal.:francis:

The broader trends are interesting, but for Issa it probably all comes down to: Insecure was a hit and Rap Sh!t was a miss.

I actually respect her for putting how she feels out there like that. Ironically, that's the type of vulnerability that made her earlier work like Insecure so popular.

Once she decided to name a show Rap Sh!t, half the audience wasn't even going to give the first episode a chance. The recent Billboard listings showed us rap hasn't been hitting for a while. Combine that with the leads both being female and all it brings to mind is the ratchet/thot rap of today: fun to occasionally listen to in the club, but not to watch a story about. Hard pass.

Tyler Perry built a loyal fanbase, found a formula, and brings in $$$. He’s up there with Shonda Rhimes and her bs.
But Issa should have they too right? Maybe if she didn’t put all her shyt on hbo. I don’t know :yeshrug: She made content centered to her generation and was really doing things at one point.. Why wouldn’t she be able to keep it going? Tyler makes dumb ass shyt but he also makes decent shyt. Tyler shoots for younger and older crowds though, maybe that’s the issue

This is honestly the climate right now:

That’s the thing about White folks. They only show up when it makes them look “in the scene” and gives them social clout. When you fall off they’ll show you who they are and what they think about you again.

If she’s looking for White, Latin, Asian, etc. money/viewers dumping into projects like the past, it ain’t there anymore. Folks today don’t support other groups of people like the kumbaya 2000’s-2010’s era.

I definitely don’t believe this lol. Just the hashtag era shyt that was going on is over. Saying black people aren’t cool anymore is crazy. These are the people that need to go outside :russ:

She supposed to be the one creating opportunities at this point.
She came from the grassroots and now has the resources (successful show, multiple fancy restaurants and rooftop bars in LA, executive produced a movie) to finance other grassroot organic projects

One benefit of this is we might go back to black media coming from "the people"
The last couple of years have been dominated by the ivy league jack and jill types (black lady sketch comedy show, southside, the chi) who used connections to dominate black media and a lot of people thought the results were mixed

It makes sense; streaming services sans Netflix are struggling, plus Hollywood only wants movies with big ips(superheroes, barbie, mario, etc). The days of sitcoms like Livin Single, or movies akin to Stomp the Yard are done. Black creatives will have to rely on being indie online, these big outlets will no longer platform them.

Agreed.

Seems like Hollywood is starting to look like Newspapers after CraigsList came in and stomped all the buildings.

Shows like abbot elementary are doing well and it seems they don’t need to throw obvious things in your face.

I don't even view that show as similar to the other shyt. Abbot Elementary is a legit comedy, in line with The Office and other successful shows. And it's not just a "black show" either. There are a lot of black people in it, amongst others. Too often you get these weird caricature driven, targeted black shows instead of just making a good fukking show. I never watched Mad Men and thought "this is a good white show." It's a good show.

IMO too many of these black showrunners are stuck creatively because all they can do is hyper focus on what they deem to be black interests and stereotypes. So you get the black woman girl boss (with a gay best friend) who is too busy for love until she falls for a white guy. Or you get exaggerated super gang shows with some type of "Tupac in a business suit" emphasis or generic "rise and fall of a drug lord." Those are your options. And I'm not saying black creators shouldn't make shows about professional women or criminal men. But there's a clear inability/refusal to approach these themes (or any themes) without the most basic, generic bullshyt framework exhaustively designed to get black twitter talking.
