It bothers me how that in alot of black circles, conspiracy nuts are automatically considered smart

I find a lot of people use "facts" & stats yet do not study the methodology of how those facts are gathered.

You see people spamming this board with opinions passing it off as facts. I remember the Cosby case brehs were arguing with me without reading the deposition. Only one breh read it and he came to a different conclusion. The rest just repeated media talking points.

Yet these talking points were all used as links and facts. We are in the age where people use disinformation as facts.

thing is people misunderstand education as being something that is instilled rather that sought after.

best learning happens when there is a pursuit of knowledge.

This is true. People are rejecting the information that is "forced on them" (schools and mainstream media) and will fully embrace the information that they seek out themselves (usually becuz it entertains them or validates them in some personal way).

Obviously school and mainstream media are not perfect and spread a lot of bullshyt. But everything is not a lie, you have to accept some basic facts before you can challenge the narrative. And if you disagree with whats being taught you have to be able to provide evidence.

Whether its zodiac signs, religion, conspiracies, pseudo-science or pseudo-history, people aren't being tricked. They are choosing to believe what they want to believe. It reminds me of The Simpsons episode when Grandpa Simpson was in the hospital kirking out on the doctors. And the only thing that calmed him down was Dr. Nick diagnosing him with a bunch of fake diseases :mjlol:

the conspiracy nuts on the coli do this

i call the technique vague allusions. it's a very transparent pump fake and they can never elaborate on shyt. the whole strategy is to bombard people with unrelated information and throw them off balance but it don't work on everyone plus it's insulting because they assume that others are too dumb to follow along.

That's the ol' gish gallop but it's impressive that you could define it on your own.

Gish Gallop: When People Try to Win Debates by Using Overwhelming Nonsense – Effectiviology

Candy Owens, Bill orielly, and a bunch of other fox commentators love using that with their guests.

:ohhh:

didn't know there was a name for this. props

A classic example of a Gish gallop is a proponent of some pseudoscience, who, during the course of a debate with a scientific expert, bombards the expert with multiple weak arguments, and switches to a new argument each time the expert appears to successfully refute one of them.

so accurate wow

While people who use real facts and logic get ignored or labeled as sheep

Maybe it's just my generation(im 26) but so many black people I have conversations with don't hesitate to believe or spread any misinformation, and will shun anyone with actual facts or knowledge on a situation

shyt is sad

Unfortunately, the bar is set very low for what qualifies as black scholarship. If you look up the black "scholars" that are popular in the circles you mentioned (i.e. Dr. Ben, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, Dr. Afika, Dr. Sebi, etc), you'll find that they either didn't have PhDs at all, or if they did, it was in another subject from what they are known for. Folks care more about a good story than anything that can be "shown and proven."

Yeah I don't know if this is due to the pandemic and social media or what but the conspiratorialism in the black community has reached new heights smh. shyt is dangerous.

People don't know how to properly vet sources, don't know history, don't know basic science, don't know the scientific method, have massive amounts of (unwarranted) mistrust in certain institutions but will trust a video shared on Facebook from some "doctor" telling you what "they" don't want you to know. At this point I don't even try to argue with people:francis:.

And probability and statistics needs to be a requirement in high school :francis:

Conspiracy theories been around forever in the black community.. Its just that we run to excuses more now than ever before on why shyt can't be done

Rep back. I'm still legit impressed you were able to define on your own :heh:
i see the strategy used constantly so i started to understand what it was about. the human mind is amazing yet in some instance also predictable. for example their definitions of who uses it are perfect and like I said I think the people who use this technique think they are smarter than everyone in the room. people with real knowledge don't underestimate their opponents.
