Toys, gifts, allowance aren’t required in my opinion. It’ll be nice to give them on occasion, but it’s not something that should be built into the budget.

I disagree about the budget bit. A budget should take the most conservative approach to accounting, meaning you factor it in. If you spend it, cool it's accounted for. If you don't, it's extra money left over.

It why a lot of people blow their budgets and can't keep their heads above water. :manny:

As far as what's required, again that's an individual thing. If you want your kid to grow up like Harry Potter not getting shyt and sleeping in a broom closet, that's your choice.

And this number doesn't include the cost of college tuition, which will likely go up.

Plus it doesn't take into consideration local costs of living adjustments, which is relevant for Black folks considering we are concentrated in a handful of metros that generally are also ranked high in COL.

And so that 300k over 18 years for white folks spread out across the country isn't neatly comparable to cats living primarily in NYC, DC, LA, and the Bay where the competition is crazy for those who aspire for their kids to have upper middle class lifestyles and outcomes.

The high costs is part of why DINK aka Dual Income No Kids couples( especially college educated couples) are becoming more prevalent and will likely end up influencing policy and culture in a major way.
