Where I shouldn't be
i got nothin' but the utmost respect for pete rock as a producer and the foundation he helped innovate in hip hop. but dilla came through with his pete (among many other producers' influence) influence and stretched out his sound far greater and further than pete rock did or could even imagine

i feel like dilla took it where it seemed like pete rock should have but didn't because he just didn't know how to keep up with the times. dilla at his core had a strong pete rock influence along with many other hip hop and music producers but he had a far greater range in his level of creativity as an producer and artist

pete rock was the shyt and 1 of the best from the early to mid 90's but after main ingredient he got stale with his sound but he wasn't able to evolve with time. all that said, pete is still a legend but dilla was better a producer
...No lies were told here.

And I'm a real fan of both ftr.

I hope Madlib gets remembered in the history books. He never had any commercial success (Dilla had some, arguably) but he was neck and neck with Dilla at his peak, has more projects to his name, arguably inspired the soul chopping Dilla did on Donuts (listen to what Dilla was doing before then after Jaylib), the whole no-drums shyt ALC n them were doing, and has a legit classic with Madvillainy....

A lot of people might put 'Lib above Dilla but he ain't a hip, cool-signifier like Dilla is these days (Rick Ross, Dre and Pusha T namedrops). It doesn't make much sense to praise one and forget the other in this case

no disrespect but i think Madlib is better than both...

I need someone to put me onto Madlib. While I think some of his work on Madvillainy was flat out genius (Accordion, Strange Ways, Rhinestone Cowboy, Fancy Clown and ALL CAPS), I've had a hard time getting into his other shyt.

The only other beat of his that I like is "Infinity". I've heard Jaylib and the first third of The Unseen (had to turn that shyt off)

What are his uber-classic beats? Let's start with 5 for now. Thanks!!

what do you mean by that
Progressions with his music, whether it was hiphop, neo soul/r&b(sampled or musicians) it never felt as predictable as Pete rock music does at times...

For instance

He sampled that and left it in 6/8 time SIGnature, most producers would forced it into 4/4 and it would have lost its feel and resolve

I can kind of see what you're saying but at the same time there is no Dilla without Pete Rock.
There is no 9th Wonder without Pete Rock.
There's a lot of dudes who aren't gonna be around if not for the trails that Pete blazed.

and the thing is, Pete's STILL around making dope music.

better is subjective, and I can see why someone might feel Dilla is better. but if we're talking about overall impact on Hip Hop then I'm going with Pete Rock. there's a litany of producers and beatmakers that we can consider his sons in a sense.

fair point.

I just don't think one is 'more musical' than the other. Both are musical.

Besides, "Stakes Is High" is not that great of a beat, especially for Dilla. And it doesn't match up with Pete Rock's best.

Thats a tough one. Mostly because he makes so many full length projects that its hard to narrow down to 5 beats. Heres 5 off the top (not including Madvillain)
