You got dudes who outside of their mama and aunties have never been told that they were good looking. Some men don't fully understand that women have preferences and types and also focus on looks. They not as looks oriented as men are...but u still need to attract her physically and sexually somewhat. Some men also have huge egos so they can't be realistic that they are just average or even below average.

To be fair, a lot of men get told "women don't care about looks" so they overplay the whole thug thing

There were a lot of men I encountered (when I was in the dating scene) that were not being 100 with themselves about what made them attractive/unattractive to the opposite sex.
