Completely disagree, as when Primo and 9th Wonder were in their heyday/peaks, dudes weren't going up to them and asking for nearly the exact beat that they produced for someone else. Even Timbaland and Pharrell (who aren't sample based producers) were in high demand, people weren't passing around nearly identical beats, unlike Lex, Southside, Sonny Digital and a lot of other current producers.

I know a lot of rnb and rap producers that study music theory. Dr. Dre studies music theory formally. Metroboomin talks about learning music theory and piano in the 10th grade here: Metro Boomin, London On Da Track and Southside - XXL
