It's wild how so much of that album's history is overlooked or forgotten. Hell, until a couple years ago the If I Ruled The World video wasn't even on youtube officially. The album went double plat within a couple months, had multiple hit singles, and was the number one selling album in the NATION for four weeks...

Huge album. And if we wanna really be real...I get why some "real hip hop" fans didn't like aspects of its sound back then, but you could easily argue it was ahead of its time. All that Rick Ross, Drake, etc "bars over lush, smooth beats" shyt are branches from that IWW sound. And today the same people who would say they didn't like IWW in 1996 will say they fukk with Ross lol.

Nas is the only major hip hop artist that got stuck in one box by hip hop media and some fans that couldn't keep up. I've noticed more people giving his other albums in his discography more love of late. His music ages really well, because it's not much fluff or commercialized sounds.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..

peep the comment section.. MAD legendary emcees and celebs saying it’s their fav Nas album. People’s true feelings coming out in the comments. Even Fat Joe in the comments. Nas REALLY needs to celebrate this album and stop letting history be rewritten in a negative light about it. Even E40 in the comments. Lol

I still get bugged out from time to time, thinking Nas was only 22 or 23 when he made this album :gucci:

my second favorite Nas album behind Stillmatic.

1. Stillmatic
2. It Was Written
3. Illmatic
4. I AM
5. God'Son

Love this album, but if someone can break down “take it in blood” I’d appreciate it. I’ve heard my cousin say it just sounds smooth, but nas has never been the type to just say shyt. I know this song has meaning. Even the line “you’ll be alright like blood money in a pimps cum”
