I think it was posted in here or on socials, but I saw a post that said " Watching this show, those kids(pic of kids from 1989) fought Pennywise when he was MJ on the Wizards status"With how they have shown Pennywise in the show, it's hard to believe they ever beat him in 1989

They keep sort of ignoring Maturin in live action and this is the issue. Maturin blessed the losers and they also have a lower level of the Shine. It's why they survived well mostlyWith how they have shown Pennywise in the show, it's hard to believe they ever beat him in 1989

They are being protected by Maturin (a giant, cosmic turtle god). Maturin is basically the good version of It/Pennywise.
GREAT POINT....
THEY HAVE TO COME
UP WITH SOMETHING THAT
WEAKENS PENNYWISE IN EP 8
WHICH MADE HIM PRONE TO DEFEAT
IN 89.

They have shown subtle turtle references and symbols throughout this season. The Natives buried the shards in turtle shells. Lily was given a turtle bracelet by Matty (and she says "turtles are lucky"). The mascot of Derry High is a turtle, etc.

The recent It movies don't make mention of Maturin, but it's basically the unspoken hidden reality.
YOU REFERRING TO THE BOOK?
I DON'T REMEMBER A TURTLE GOD
IN CHAPTER 1

Also, like I said, in this season of Welcome to Derry, they've shown numerous subtle turtle references and symbols (obviously meant to allude to Maturin).

Maturin was helping to protect the kids in It: Chapter 1... but more indirectly.
OK WE'RE TALKING
ABOUT THE KIDS BEATING
PENNYWISE IN 2017'S CHAPTER 1.
THERES NO MENTION OF
ANY TURTLE SO WE'RE NOT
GOING WITH THAT UNLESS
THEY GIVE US SOMETHING IN EP 8
THAT LEADS INTO CHAPTER 1
Maturin was helping to protect the kids in It: Chapter 1... but more indirectly.
In the beginning of the movie, at the bottom of Bill & Georgie's walkie-talkies, there was the code "TRTL500" (a reference to Maturin). Bill also picked up a LEGO turtle in the basement.

So you're just going to be stubborn and stick your head in the sand?
I DONT WANT TO
HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT
A MATURIN UNTIL MUSCHIETTI
MENTIONS HIM IN HIS ADAPTATION.
IF YOU NEVER KNEW
ANYTHING ABOUT THE LORE
AND SIMPLY WATCHED THE MOVIES
AND THIS SHOW THERE HASNT
BEEN ANYTHING PRESENTED TO
SHOW THE 89 KIDS WERE PROTECTED
BY MATURIN BECAUSE NO ONE
HAS EVER HEARD OF IT

He's got a point. The turtle references are nice easter eggs for those of us who read the book, but there's currently been no explicit reference to Maturin in any of the movies (OG or Muschetti), and to date no mention in the show. Now if it comes out that the pillars were forged from Maturin's shell or something in the final episode, it opens the door for the 1989 kids getting some (unseen) help.So you're just going to be stubborn and stick your head in the sand?
Cool. Not my problem![]()

I haven't read the book (nor any other Stephen King book lol). I didn't get the turtle references either until I saw people discussing it online during the first few episodes of the show. He's got a point. I think the most logical explanation for the '89 kids getting a W is Penny wasn't used to a true challenge. The losers in this 1962 timeline haven't really put up a fight all things considered (Lilly only had "success" because the pillar was in the water in front of her). I'd argue that the '89 kids just caught him slipping because he underestimated them.
