It's amazing how Will Smith's career instantly recovered and nobody even talks about the slap anymore. Everybody had to choose between Will and Chris

Tim Cruise has been a certified weirdo for a long time and is still popping out Mission Impossible movies that do pretty well. Brad Pitt’s kids are dropping his last name (even his biological ones) and no one really cares. Will Smith will be fine.

He didn’t INSTANTLY recover but his moves after the scandal were masterful.

He acknowledged what he did was wrong and didn’t try to rationalize it

He publicly stated he was going to therapy

After that he laid low for a min

And most importantly Jada STOPPED embarrassing him for a time.

I think sometimes we forget that Will Smith, alongside Leonardo Di’Caprio, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt are the LAST of the bonafide “Movie Stars” of the 90’s (Denzel has been a star since the 80’s so he predates them) and Will is the unique position of being black Hollywood royalty so he was NEVER going to get “thrown away” completely.

What the whole incident highlighted for me was that people REALLY don’t seem to like Chris Rock outside of the comedy circles.

It wasn't that big of a deal and people were just exaggerating based on the information of their marriage at the time since it was soo public in the spotlight.

Plus in retrospect even tho some were giving Chris the benefit of the doubt, a lot of people subconsciously probably understood why Will reacted the way that he did, comedian or not, Chris Rock was out of line to make fun of a person's health condition.

I forgot about it myself until I saw this thread.

I think it helps that most people understand that it was him lashing out due to his weird relationship with Jada

This.

While I wouldn't go as far to say things are back to normal as far as his stardom... he smacked a man under perceived disrespect of his wife. Nobody is REALLY going to have an issue with that. If anything, it only matters because of where it happened and who he was defending (and as trash as she may be... that's still his wife).

But as pointed out, he took his penance and let it fall where it may until it was somebody else's turn.

That wasn’t by choice though as her book release was a major flop. If it didn’t, she would have kept continuing to talk about it.

This weekend and after will definitely be a litmus test if Bad Boys has legs and is a hit.

He will continue to be a major player in Hollywood and one of the last true action movie stars. There's only a few movie stars over age 50 that are still working at his level. He and Denzel are the only Black movie stars still working at their level.

And to take this a step further, Hollywood is a dying industry. Major movies have been flopping, new “stars” are failing to gain traction or keep a following, superhero themes are overdone, AI is taking over, and the industry is not doing well overall. He is fine and will continue to be. Even if this movie underperforms. Everything has been under performing.
