It's been 100 years since Einstein proposed relativity

By progressing from theory to fact.

fact
fakt/
noun
  1. a thing that is indisputably the case

And I know science is doing this to a degree. But it's also dangerous when people think of things in a factual context, when it should be a "this is not a fact, but rather the best explanation we have at the moment" context. This is important because our beliefs impact heavily how we interpret and process information.

I'll leave it there since most heavy science types tend to get defensive in this kind of convo.
can you point me to your standard in this post? I can't find it
what are the criteria that you would use to take something from theory to fact or law?

All theories are inherently falsifiable.

Instead think of it this way.

Think of facts as fruit and logic as the basket. As a theory progresses through time the fruit in the basket on the first day will be the same fruit on day 20. However you might have been working with a round basket initially but on day 20 your logic mow supports a rectangular basket.

Hope that helps

If theres a 99% chance that you win the lottery tonight if you play, you would play every time, right?
Do you also not consider it factual that people are made up of cells? After all, it's just called "Cell Theory", not fact.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_theory

Well, since it's just a theory I guess we gotta wait for scientists to prove we're made up of cells. It's not indisputably proven yet. We don't know if the theory is right or wrong, otherwise it'd be a fact. :troll:
In life theory is less respected than law
In science law is less respected than theory

I don't know if respected is the right word...but Christ did some of y'all go to school

Furthermore all science is constantly trying to be broken. The reason we don't say evolution and gravity is a fact is because you are always striving to disprove them. Stating something as fact is extremely short sidedshort sided

See :pachaha:

Hardcore science heads always take this as a knock on science, when it isn't. It's more like a warning. A warning not to let an idea hold the status of "fact" in one's mind if it isn't indeed a fact.

The reason it's dangerous is because our beliefs influence, and most of the time determine the validity of, every single thought that comes after them. So it's not just accepting one incorrect idea as a fact, but then what about all the subsequent things that are considered factual based on the initial fact? Also, the things that are not considered factual because they may conflict with the original idea that was falsely presented as a fact. You can't build true knowledge on a faulty foundation.

As you can see it's a slippery slope, and just something to be aware of. No shade :yeshrug:

Yeah, that's exactly what people are trying to tell you.

You can't accept gravity as a fact. You're pretty certain that gravity has worked before, and I imagine you're pretty confident that gravity will continue working tomorrow. But it's not a fact.

Exactly the same with relativity.

Trust me I understand what you and brothers like Ill are trying to say.

But this is about more than just concepts like relativity and gravity breh.

Edit: And where on Earth is the existence of gravity not a fact?! Let me find out negroes is floatin' lol :pachaha:

I'll disprove it hypothetically right now.

As of now simply put we think of it is as the attraction of matter. Crude but for arguments sake...

Say tomorrow we wake up and gravity is higher than today. Turns out through drilling we found out that it wasn't matter makin gravity it was little gnomes beatin off their meat.

Poor example I know...but u get the point. New discoveries can disprove institutions

He was wrong. The big bang is a myth, Einstein himself said black holes don't exist except on paper, thus if black holes don't exist, then the singularity doesn't either.
