Like, deep into the mid-2000s I'd say a good chunk of people still thought a lot of that Jet Li shyt was real and not just for the movies.

Pre-2000, it was practically conventional wisdom that some 5'2 120 pound bald monk from china could knock out Mike Tyson by hitting pressure points and shyt :skip:. We all just assumed that those Steven Seagal/Van Damme fight scenes had some basis in reality and that there were people out there that really could take out 20 goons with some flying kicks.

Idk, its just crazy how many word of mouth/urban legend myths survived right up until the social media age.

Here's the thing

even the most watered down martial art can still do damage.

but Kung Fu is basically a combination of legitimate martial arts like WuShu.

MMA and other freestyle fighting rulesets really setup what works and what doesnt, both are young when it comes to mainstream combat sports
crazy thing is we are still in the bob cousy bounce pass era of mma too. 30 years from now people are going to be calling these current stars janitors and some goat level mma fighter is gonna beasting on people while making it look like an action movie at the same time.

You act like movies like Bloodsport didn't heavily influence UFC/MMA.
