I strongly believe that Larry Brown is the reason Darko never developed in the NBA. This is a coach who straight up sat his best players because they were "young" in the Olympics.

You had cats like Marbury, Lamar Odom and Richard Jefferson playing much bigger roles than LeBron, Wade and Melo who are all first ballot hall of famers.

Darko wasn't as bad as we let on... whenever he was given minutes, he did great. he played in the fiba world's and did great..

the problem was, brown wasn't giving him minutes. he got drafted and avg 5 mins a game. they had wallace and sheed already.. and he was a young 18 year old rookie. he was begging for time and brown wouldn't give him any. so he basically got a fukk this attitude. but again.. look as his numbers in any game he got minutes, he did his thing. nobody gave him a chance really. getting drafted to a championship contender was always his bad luck

if he was drafted to minnesota, he might be kevin love.. putting up amazing stats for no wins but looked at like a star for it
Stop it dArko never did great with the pistons.

Dumars was dead set on drafting Darko. The scout that told Cuban/Don Nelson to draft/trade for Dirk was hired by the Pistons. He told Dumars that Darko is a mix of Dirk/KG...Dude was one for two :manny:

If Dumars didn't want Melo then he should've drafted Bosh when they needed a PF.

I still think they should've drafted Melo, after his season at Syracuse. But like others said, Larry Brown would've barely played him. He was a gift and a curse to the Pistons.

nikka is that what I said? At all? At any time?

I said he did great in games where he got minutes. He played for many teams internationally and the nba.

I didn’t say seasons. I didn’t even say months. I said GAMES where he got MINUTES. Like others have said. No he wasn’t melo. Hell no. But he wasn’t Anthony Bennett either

What kills me about these Melo Detroit "what ifs" is assuming Melo would have been this team player because "the vets would have made him" Dumbest shyt i ever heard. It's been 15 years and Melo has been the exact same player. THAT player would not have worked in that Detroit system.

Sorry yall but im taking my 1 for sure 04 championship over these what ifs. We have dudes on the coli talking shyt and never seen their team win a title n their lifetime.

Darko was the #2 player for alot of those lotto teams. The Darko fiasco is why NBA scouts are more detailed internationally.

One of the biggest blunders of all time.

Darko had talent. In a different environment things could have turned out much differently.

Kobe snitched on Shaq
By comparison, head coach Larry Brown was 63 years old and coming off winning an NBA championship with veteran Detroit Pistons players willing to acquiesce to what some would consider a conservative and throwback style of basketball. That coaching approach led others to believe the real reason Team USA's best players stayed home was because of Brown.

From Jefferson, via NBC Sports' Bill Leopold and Ben Teitelbaum:

"I remember in the qualifier for the Olympics, h told Jason Kidd, ‘Hey Jason, I know you're really good at the fast break, but I want you to stop at the free-throw line and throw a bounce pass to one of the wings.’ And you're sitting here talking to the second all-time leading assist guy and one of the most dominant point guards of all time. Truth be told, that's probably why nine guys decided that they didn't want to go do the Olympics."
