I’ve always said this but Asians treat math and science like we treat playing sports.

People can hate on Thomas Sowell all they want. But he was one of the first to bring it up

Culture matters. What values you are instilling in your community and your children predicts who successful you are going to be when you grow up. Anti-intellectualism is unfortunately rampant in the Black Community

This is the most “the coli” comment I’ve seen so far this month down to the insult at the end. You know your experience is the exception to the rule but you couldn’t wait to fly in with this. We (culturally) value sports because we’ve excelled at it. There is nothing wrong with it. I embrace it if you’re special but the reality is: being at the top 1% of the 1% are incredible odds.

Blacks in Stem on the hand is not as common but the odds are better (to actually achieve and make a decent living).

Representation is real. If we don’t see people like us doing it, it’s hard to imagine it

On that note, I just edited it to include Pawgs.

America is a nation that focuses on risk and short term gains.

The rest of the world focuses on longevity. An investment in education is something that can pay off over an entire lifetime. They understand this.

When you watch movies and tv shows from other parts of the world like Germany, England, south Africa, japan etc. Its remarkable how mature the people are. Adulthood is something that people actually respect. Over here people are in their 50s making the same kind of mistakes they were making as teenagers and young adults. People aren't honest with one another and its a constant game of bullshytting others.

Its not a white or black thing, its American culture as a WHOLE that focuses too much on short term gain and risk. People who travel to Japan or Korea come back saying "they're so ahead" nah breh, they aren't ahead they just give a shyt about the longevity of their people and culture. America doesn't. We don't have the same kind of programs they do because our government and financial institutions care about coddling the feelings of white billionaires instead of making the country one where everyone has a fair chance to succeed.

I was going to respond to his nonsense but I decided not to. Breh knows damn well we’re not going to summer camp for math :dead: at my summer camp, we were canoeing, playing capture the flag at night, and roasting s’mores. These dudes are doing calculus in the woods :dead:

We had University of Louisiana, La Tech, Grambling right down the road, and Jackson State across the state line. Grambling specifically has an engineering pipeline for high school students. Yes brehs were going to after school math programs to make sure they were right.

My little area has the advantage of being close to so many higher education resources.

I realize some places don’t.

Above the fray.
They out here doing competitions, decathlons, and stay away training camps :why: Summer camp for Math is crazy :why: If black folk can ever get in the mindset to treat academics like this, we’d be just as good.

The thing you can do is to locate academic enrichment resources, steer your younger relatives towards them, and make your circle aware of those options for their children.

Have to view the issue on a household by household basis, not along racial lines. Each household has different family culture and set of values & priorities.

Honestly, this is an American thing and whenever white America gets a cold, we get cancer.

You got white people struggling to get into departments that are literally just staffed damn near entirely
by indians, the japanese, chinese and south koreans.
You know it's bad when WHITE PEOPLE are complaining about a rigged game!

So yes, them babies need to be treating their academics like sports.
He can still play football and basketball but he better be good at fukking Calculus and Physics too.
