Ok my thing with these "comparisons" is yeah you'll find similarities in the way these artists operate but to compare somebody like Drake to Hov is a slap in the face to Hov's discography and the work he's put out, same with Cole and Nas or whoever, and I'm saying that as an enormous fan of all these rappers. Drake does not have an album in his repertoire touching RD, BP, BA, nor has he ever been as technically & lyrically proficient as Jay. Cole does not have an album or a mixtape touching Illmatic, IWW, or Stillmatic, nor has he ever been as technically & lyrically proficient as him. Same thing with Future and Lil Wayne. The differences stop at the way they present themselves and put out their music. In fact, comparing these newer artists to old legends does a huge disservice to them and sets unreasonable expectations on their music. I think comparing Kendrick to Andre is the only old vs. new comparison that makes sense and isn't disrespecting decades of classic songs + albums

Still waiting to read how "Neighbors" goes with the "concept" of the album. Because "False Prophets" sounds perfect right after it, if it were to be placed on this album...

Neighbors isn't per'se, unless you want to take it literally that the narrator relocated to a white neighborhood but still selling dope. But Neighbors is based on an actually incident. It's even written on the credits as stating it's based on true events. So, yea. Neighbors is a departure from the narrative, but pretty much everything else is about his friend and how it parallels or contrast from his own life he's currently living. The album starts off with someone pushing play on the tape and ends with the tape stopping and ejected as if someone was listening to it, to which the final track speaks on. The songs like "Ville Mentality" and "Changes" provides both past and present happenings towards what happened to his friend James and his daughter's being upset that he's no longer there. And of course the rest is about the narrator's progression from being an uncaring street dude to finding love, marriage, and becoming a father and how all of that is changing him but he couldn't escape the streets. Even Foldin' Clothes has that message in the final verse where the reason why he's enjoying this life (for now) is because he doesn't want to revert back to the life he was previously living. All of this is summed up in the final track.

So yea, Neighbors may not be about his friend James, but considering ALL of it is really about J. Cole and himself becoming a husband and now a father, all of it is connected. All of these songs are really about J. Cole and where his current life is at and reflection how what it could of been for one of his closest friends.

You DO know this was by ELITE, right? J. Cole's right hand.... it's also on the album credits as based from a true story.
It just seems like this whole concept of the songs being explained are to cover up the fact that the album is nothing special. The concept seems dope, he just didn't deliver this fantastic album that the people who are explaining the story arch would want you to believe.

After listening to this album is am now an ex just cole fan. I though he turned it around with the last album but he still had no subject matter, he literally raps about nothing. It sounds like duck tales all of it, I only felt as if his first few mistakes and first album sounded sincere this new shot shows he ain't been through shyt and his storytelling is subject par

Lol can't believe some of the stuff I read on here sometimes, clearly the it's a concept album, that's not after the fact, it's clearly a concept album if you listen to it, the title track, She's Mine parts etc.... Sometimes it seems like people haven't listened before talking.
