I actually think the Kanye shyt switched the discussion up a bit as well.

People stopped talking about KOD after Kanye's commentary completely

He thought 1985 would generate more buzz as well.

But you’re right. Kanye took away from more than that

I think fans over hyped 1985 more than Cole. The early word from the fan listening sessions was "Cole disses Pump/mumble rappers" and that hype took on a life of its own. In reality the song isn't even a diss track and is moreso good advice than "fukk you."

So I don't think Cole did it solely for buzz or anything. And if he did it didn't work.

People treat rappers so wrong now lol. J Cole Kendrick and Drake are at the point in their careers now where they should be considered legends. They have years in the game now. People still be on Cole’s neck about delivering on his album while at the same time he’s out here going at least one time platinum every album. People still asking if Drake is a legend.. I’d hope he would be one by now after 10 plus years in the game AND HE STILL HERE! Rappers fro, the 80’s and 90’s got their legendary statuses in 5 years or less... seems like the current guys be having to fight for years to even be considered. J Cole is doing ok for himself despite his chart position.
