The question is does it need to be edgy and hardcore in every instance or is it better, for everyone, that is shows diversity and different perspectives? You have the hardcore with the regular.
I think that's a good question and Hip Hop has answered with more
diversity in the mainstream.
Various rappers have managed to keep their "Hip Hop-ness" while
avoiding becoming gangster rap cliches.
I mean one of the largest stars in the game right now was
recorded begging for tuna sandwiches from his mother in a
mansion.

Which is wild considering which sub-genre really
blew Hip Hop up and dictated it's direction for
like two decades.
I honestly think as time goes on more "Average joe" rappers
will become the norm, I mean just look at Mac Miller and Macklemore.
