One thing I don't love about Cole is that he often sounds like he's not one of the cool homies spitting wisdom but ones parent trying to spit wisdom.

He sounds like he's telling people what to do and how to think and he sounds like he thinks that he's saying some Einstein-level shyt.
It doesn't take away too much from the music, still a dope album, but I really fukks with when he just sounds cool and effortless it gives music more replay value.

Powerful post. I just finished my third spin, trying to force myself to revisit because of the hype and I just don’t understand why he feels compelled to spit from that perspective

It’s like he’s the culture police and he’s rapping to to criticize others for their ... “vices, style of rap, style, preferences” etc etc

Maybes he’s insecure? I know he set the bar very high for himself with Forest Hill Drive. Drugs and hip hop culture have been married from the beginning.. it’s not going to change lol...

This is definitely his worst project. It's still "good" compared to today's atmosphere in the mainstream, but this has a total mixtape vibe to it, which maybe why it was a surprise drop. People argue that all projects with original beats are to be considered "Albums", but this is a prime example where it's clear this project was worked on less than his real albums. EDIT: and there's nothing wrong with that, becuz free Cole music.

Lyrics: 8/10 Lots of great storytelling and imagery, reminiscent of Nas with less street vibe.

Hooks: 6/10 Hooks are hit or miss, there's no melody in alot of them, which has been a staple of dope Cole hooks his whole career

Beats: 5/10 Very fundamental, perhaps on purpose to make you vibe on the vocals more, but alot sound like under produced skeletons. I like the overall mood of them, but just not enough going on to actually add to the value of the song.

Overall 7/10, good for music standards, not good for Cole standards. Fav track Window Pain.

I'm in that crowd of OG Cole supporters who found Cole's last album outside of False Prophetz/everybody dies absolutely trash and disappointing.

I can't stop listening to KOD tho. This shyt ride and has great replay value.

The only two songs I really skip or can't get into "the cut off" and "friends" everything else is good.

:salute: to Cole

The little girl I met this past summer said, "Don't forget me"
I won't forget you, how could I with all you went through?
A bullet hit yo cousin in Temple while he was with you
And while you was talkin, I was tearin up, where's the tissue?
If you was my sister then I would kiss you and tell you that I'm sorry for the pain you had to live through
I know I'm blessed because yo stress is realer than anything I done been through

He definitely use to be one of the cool homies kicking knowledge. That’s basically what The Warm up & FNL were

Songs like “Lights Please” make you think that Cole would’ve been one your college homies that chilled and talked about girls, politics and sports seamlessly in the same convo while playing 2k and getting faded

Fun little asides in Coles music like “ couldn’t even watch the Allstar game had to do the whole Valentine’s Day thing so my girl wouldn’t complain” are completely gone and it’s just super serious topic and bars

Interesting that you say that because it's EXACTLY how I feel about Kendrick. Kendrick always act like he had the answer and telling people pseudo bullshyt, and on this Israelite shyt saying telling people they're not black no more and all kinds of mumbo jumbo to twist shyt to appear he on some Tesla level of rapper which he's not really saying much when you really stop and think about it.

The BIGGEST difference, for me at least, between J. Cole and Kendrick is that it's been DOCUMENTED that J. Cole is that kind of dude that scroll in by himself to any one's hood to come kick it as if he's no different from any other brother. And the main reason people gravitate to his music is because they CAN relate to what he's saying. I mean got-damn, he did a song about losing your virginity for the 1st time. It may song corny, but that is shyt that everybody gone through. Same with this album. You don't necessarily have to be a druggy, but everyone have an addiction to something or demons within their lives or past that you want to kill off. It's not that he's more intelligent, but more understand to real life experiences that we all have. Whereas, Kendrick, he doesn't or it's never documented as someone who just kicks it with anyone but his own boys he grew up with or the core Black Hippy clique of TDE. I always respect his talent and love his music, but he always comes off a bit of a snobbish, I'm more intelligent than everybody type dude. He maybe not used to be like that but that's how he comes off as now. The controversial shyt on songs like "The Blacker the Berry"...

So, I understand where you are coming from, I just see it on someone like Kendrick, or definitely Lupe and really don't want to discuss him because I lost any kind of fandom I had for him due to that aspect you just stated. I, honestly cannot see that with Cole. If anything, he's more passive aggressive when he address a lot of shyt, even in Friends, before he suggest people should meditate over medicate, he concedes it not the most popular suggestion to commit to. But if that's how you feel about Cole, that's cool. I see it more in others, IMO.

Nah son, that’s an unfair criticism of Lupe, he’s definitely not rapping at you or talking down. His rhymes have become more cryptic, I can see that being a valid criticism but Lupe ain’t on some holier than thou shyt

J Cole seems like he’s isolating himself from his peers and making the music he wants to make which I respect. If I can’t get jiggy with it, it’s just not for me but I can’t knock him.
