I'm being honest breh. 1985 is solid writing. The best shyt he's ever written imo. And I can't think of another hip hop song that's like it - a track dedicated to shytting on the new generation while giving some potent advice. The really funny thing is that Cole is basically shytting on himself. He's the gimmick that's wearing thin. :pachaha:

i totally agree. some people won't agree but it reminds me of drop a gem on them. if you look through the thread i said its obvious what the best songs are and you could tell what Cole took his time in and wrote and funny cause 1985 was one of them

Okay, Drogas Light was nowhere near Lupe's best work.

But you can't call an album with verses like this absolute trash.

"Uh, tell me call up Soundtrakk, have him send a couple beats
Not that "Superstar" shyt, she wanted somethin' for the streets
Said it might take like a month, she said it better take a week
Gave my arm a little punch and then she pointed at her heat
Said, "I saw that thing the first time, you don't gotta do it twice
But I need a lil' more info on exactly what I write
Some details 'bout a female, 'bout your life and what you like"
She said, "My life is like a bytch, and I'm just like my life"
Then pow-pow-pow-pow-pow, yeah, them nikkas started bussin'
Like that boycott was over and that we had overcome it

She said, "nikka, hit the gas," went from zero to a hunnid
Now we runnin' from some killers, I was so sick to my stomach
She was hangin' out the window with that thumper she was dumpin'
Had a look upon her face that made me think that she was cummin'
"

"Peace, no material possessions shall cloud my judgement
As I reach, in an ethereal direction to provide my substance
Love is not found but resides insides me, I manifest this
I will respect myself and wear serenity as my necklace
I will replace what I take and have tranquility as my breakfast
Shed a new light on a new path
I will gain rhythm and lose wrath, attain wisdom and refuse graft
And build upon what I built on
and wisely regulate time I do have
Cause what is defeat? But just the evidence of my haste
Lack of preparedness, in my waste, so I wait

Surround myself with nutrition, wholesomeness and true livin'
Use natural codes of conduct to remove schism when the rules missin'
I will pursue felicity, find value in simplicity
Altruism and empathy will be the first thing extended to my enemy
Clarity will be the trademark of my friendships
Just invest in my business and appreciative of the rarity of my existence
"

"And in the futuristic
Love will be reduced to physics
Computer digits made by robots
That use statistics, algorithms, and group logistics
The mood-resistant
Downloadable thing that's used specific
Easily updated with few commitments
Can find its way home if you forget it
Say, maybe on a starship tour
Heard a knock at your starship door
It was the girl that you had met at the starship bar
Had a dance on the starship floor
But then you got starship sick
So you had to run to the starship store
And then you got those starship pills
But when you back she wasn't there no more
She says, "Hope you got a starsuit at the starship store
Maybe we can take a trip
To take a look at the stars around parsec 4"
And it was the most beautiful thing
You both had ever seen in your lives before
And she pulled out her love
So you reached down in your starsuit for
But your pockets empty, now the moments passin'
It'll probably never happen like this again
I guess it didn't work out for you in the end"
I don't read music, I listen to it with my ears

Okay, just rode this thang from top to bottom in the gym, and I must say this is a nice album from Cole. Different from his other shyt, but not so abstract. Honestly, I felt like he dumbed it down sonically to show other contemporary artists he can move in that space if he felt like it.

Solid work.
I agree. I think that is way i’m not really feeling the album. I’m not a big fan of that sound. I understand and appreciate the message Cole was sending. However I don’t really like the first half of the album. The second half of the album is much better imo. From BRACKETS on down the album is pretty good. The problem is a hate most of the other songs.

I think his beats were a lot better in the Warm Up/FNL era. That was when he did HiiPower, which is one of the best beats of this decade

The biggest problems are the drums I think. There's a lot going on with them but they sound so tiny so it just makes it all sound worse. And the samples are really muted. I think if he went with some harder boom nap drums and made the samples sound "bigger" these beats would be flames.

1st time playin any Cole project literally. Gotta say on 1st listen no skippables but I was headed to work. "Atm" motiv8" "window pain" gonna get multiple spins. The intro & interludes reminds me of Lupe havin his sister do spoken word.

This is his "TPAB" & if that the case, I'm a fan.
