Unfortunately the fact that teams can trade players and the players have no say and/or prior knowledge to where they end up, unless they have a clause in their contract, makes them property.

The rights for their services as athletes can be drafted for and traded. Not the players.
Athletes have not reported to new teams and used other methods to block trades. Others have retired.
